Hybrid Dynamic Bayesian network method for performance analysis of safety barriers considering multi-maintenance strategies

Shengnan Wu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a hybrid DBN-based approach for dynamic performance analysis of safety barriers in preventing subsea downhole leakage incidents. By considering maintenance and process demand, the performance of safety barriers is enhanced. The proposed dynamic Bayesian network model allows for a dynamic and comprehensive risk analysis of leakage events. The approach is tested on an offshore oil and gas well, demonstrating the importance of safety barrier performance in controlling expected leakage scenarios.

Research on quantitative risk assessment of fuel leak of LNG-fuelled ship during lock transition process

Cheng Xie et al.

Summary: This study proposes an integrated QRA model for analyzing the fuel leakage risk during lockage of LNG-fueled ships. By studying the Three Gorges lock, the largest lock in the world, it is found that the individual risk of LNG-fueled ships during lockage is low, with the main threat being heat radiation rather than overpressure.

Safety barriers in the chemical process industries: A state-of-the-art review on their classification, assessment, and management

Shuaiqi Yuan et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the development of safety barriers in chemical plants, including their definition, classification, evaluation, and management. It proposes a practical classification of safety barriers and extends their functions using the concept of resilience. Performance assessment criteria are suggested, and the management of safety barriers is discussed. A roadmap for future studies to develop integrated management of safety and security barriers for chemical plants is also provided.

Integrated management of safety and security in Seveso sites- sociotechnical perspectives

Marja Ylonen et al.

Summary: This paper examines the motivation, current status, and risks related to integrated management of safety and security (IMSS) in Seveso plants, finding that despite ongoing development, IMSS is still in its infancy. Cybersecurity is often handled separately from process safety experts, and there is inadequate communication between the two. The co-existence of technical and organizational development is crucial for achieving real IMSS.

Safety barrier performance assessment by integrating computational fluid dynamics and evacuation modeling for toxic gas leakage scenarios

Shuaiqi Yuan et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an approach integrating event tree analysis, computational fluid dynamics simulation, and evacuation modeling for risk assessment of toxic gas leakage accidents. The results show that considering the failure probabilities of technical safety barriers can avoid underestimating individual fatality risks, and timely gas detection & alarm can help reduce individual fatality risks.

Accounting for Safety Barriers Degradation in the Risk Assessment of Oil and Gas Systems by Multistate Bayesian Networks

F. Dimaio et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a multistate Bayesian Network (BN) for evaluating the functional performance of safety barriers in Oil and Gas plants, where nodes represent the safety barriers Health States (HSs) and are assessed based on specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Results from a case study demonstrate that the multistate BN model can effectively account for the safety barriers HS and their functional performance.

A dynamic multi-agent approach for modeling the evolution of multi-hazard accident scenarios in chemical plants

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: The study developed a dynamic methodology called Dynamic Graph Monte Carlo (DGMC) to model the evolution of multi-hazard accident scenarios, showing that risk may be underestimated if the spatial-temporal evolution of multi-hazard scenarios is neglected. Vapor cloud explosion (VCEs) may result in more severe damage than fire, and safety distances based solely on fire hazards are insufficient to prevent VCEs damage.

Summary: The study proposes a systematic method to analyze S&S risks by integrating attack route models, cyber security prevention route, and physical safety prevention route to quantify safety and security risks, and then integrates them via the bowtie method. The method considers the simultaneity of safety and security risks in cyber-physical systems, and can accurately assess the severity of consequences and risk levels.

Xingwei Zhen et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization approach to determine the optimum PM intervals for safety critical barriers on offshore petroleum installations, highlighting the significant impact of increased risk during PM tasks on the determination of PM intervals. The study suggests that a longer interval can be recommended when considering comprehensively the increase in risk, risk reduction, and maintenance cost.
