Bin Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, an innovative magnetic biochar catalyst was prepared for persulfate-based advanced oxidation process, and it efficiently removed levofloxacin. The results revealed that the catalyst promoted levofloxacin degradation through both non-radical pathway and direct electron-transfer pathway, with O2.- as the dominant active species.

Aerobic and anaerobic regulation induced different degradation behaviors of parachloronitrobenzene in soil by microwave activated persulfate oxidation

Jiutao An et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the degradation of p-chlor-onitrobenzene (p-CNB) in soil using a microwave activated persulfate (MW/PS) system under different oxidizing atmospheres. It was found that anaerobic conditions were more conducive to p-CNB degradation. Increasing the dosage of persulfate and microwave temperature promoted p-CNB degradation.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of various quenchers on the mechanism of a cobalt mediated peroxymonosulfate (Co(II)/PMS) process and found that these quenchers not only quench target reactive species but also cause interference effects. Therefore, caution should be exercised when applying the quenching method to investigate the mechanism of the persulfate-based process.

Activation of persulfate by magnetic zirconium-doped manganese ferrite for efficient degradation of tetracycline

Zhanmeng Liu et al.

Summary: The study developed an innovative approach for efficient removal of tetracycline in water environment by activating persulfate with oxide-based materials (ZrO2/MnFe2O4). Various factors affecting tetracycline degradation efficiency were investigated, and optimal conditions were determined. The study revealed the contributions of three radicals to rapid tetracycline degradation in the ZrO2/MnFe2O4-10/PDS system.

Heterogeneous activation of persulfate by carbon nanofiber supported Fe3O4@carbon composites for efficient ibuprofen degradation

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous catalysts for persulfate activation were synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method with ferrocene and carbon nanofiber as precursors. The catalysts exhibited high catalytic performances for ibuprofen degradation, with stable activity and minimal metal leaking over multiple cycles. Hydroxyl and sulfate radicals were identified as the main contributors to ibuprofen degradation, with the possible pathways elucidated through intermediate analysis.

Zero-valent iron and biochar composite with high specific surface area via K2FeO4 fabrication enhances sulfadiazine removal by persulfate activation

Dongmei Ma et al.

Summary: ZVI/BC with large SSA fabricated by co-pyrolysis of K2FeO4 and bamboo showed excellent performance in removing environmental contaminants, with stability and recyclability. Factors such as higher temperature, lower pH, and Cl- were beneficial while CO32- and HPO42- had inhibitory effects on pollutant removal efficiency. Both non-radical species (O-1(2)) and radical species contributed to contaminant degradation, with O-1(2) being the most important reactive oxygen species.
