Enhanced short-chain fatty acids production through a short-term anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge: Synergistic pretreatment of alkali and alkaline hydrolase blend

Heliang Pang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of alkaline hydrolase blend (AHB) incubation at initial pH 10.0 condition for enhancing anaerobic fermentation in waste activated sludge management. The results show that this method significantly increased the release of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and promoted the hydrolysis and biodegradation of dissolved organic matters. The AHB-based strategy proves to be a cost-effective and carbon-beneficial technology for sludge management.

Membrane distillation treatment of landfill leachate: Characteristics and mechanism of membrane fouling

Zhongsen Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, the membrane fouling in landfill leachate treatment by membrane distillation was systematically investigated. It was found that the increase of feed pH enhanced the deprotonation of carboxyl groups in organic matter, contributing to the formation of organo-inorganic complexation, which might be the main cause of membrane fouling in alkaline feed condition.

Insights into the wetting phenomenon induced by scaling of calcium sulfate in membrane distillation

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the interplay between growing crystals and porous structures in membrane distillation (MD) processes, in order to address the wetting issue. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to measure membrane shift and correlate scaling-induced deformation with stress variation in the crystal-containing layer. Along with stress analysis and conventional approaches, the dependence of scaling-induced wetting on crystallizing species concentration rate at high supersaturation was determined.
