Effect of an inorganic nitrogen source (NH4)2SO4 on the production of welan gum from Sphingomonas sp. mutant obtained through UV-ARTP compound mutagenesis

Lulu Wei et al.

Summary: Welan gum is an expensive extracellular polysaccharide widely used in biomedicine, food products, and petroleum due to its unique structure and excellent rheological properties. Researchers have successfully screened a high-welangum-producing mutant, B-8, through UV-ARTP compound mutagenesis. By using (NH4)2SO4 as the sole nitrogen source, the production cost of welan gum fermentation has been reduced. The study found that (NH4)2SO4 can affect the synthesis pathway and monosaccharide content of welan gum by increasing bacterial chemotaxis and the availability of key intermediates. Metabolic engineering could further enhance the fermentation performance of Sphingomonas sp. mutants by introducing specific target genes to the mutants.

Mutagenesis of high-efficiency heterotrophic nitrifying-aerobic denitrifying bacterium Rhodococcus sp. strain CPZ 24

Jingli Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-efficiency heterotrophic nitrifying-aerobic denitrifying (SND) mutant strain was obtained using ultraviolet-diethyl sulfate compound mutagenesis. The mutant strain showed significantly improved nitrogen removal performance in wastewater treatment, with higher nitrification and denitrification rates compared to wild bacteria. This study provides a successful strategy for improving the nitrogen removal efficiency of SND bacteria.
