Elastohydrodynamic Synchronization of Rotating Bacterial Flagella

Maria Tatulea-Codrean et al.

Summary: By studying the synchronization of bacterial flagella through an elastohydrodynamic mechanism, this study shows that bacterial flagella spontaneously synchronize with zero phase difference. The far-field rate of synchronization is maximized at an intermediate value of elastic compliance, which has important implications for bacteria.

Bundle formation of sperm: Influence of environmental factors

Paula Morcillo i Soler et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of physical and biochemical factors on the formation of sperm bundles in bull sperm. It is found that fluid viscosity does not significantly influence sperm bundling, but swim-up, post-thaw migration time, and suppressed capacitation increase the occurrence of sperm bundles.

A Computational Study of Hydrodynamic Interactions Between Pairs of Sperm With Planar and Quasi-Planar Beat Forms

Lucia Carichino et al.

Summary: This study simulated the 3-dimensional fluid-structure interaction of pairs of swimmers and found that different beat forms and initializations lead to either attraction or repulsion effects. Swimmers with quasi-planar beat forms and co-planar initialization exhibit stable attraction in free space, while those with perpendicular initialization near a wall approach and maintain a constant distance. Interestingly, sperm rolling is observed in cases of swimmers with preferred planar beat forms initialized near a wall.

Flagellar energetics from high-resolution imaging of beating patterns in tethered mouse sperm

Ashwin Nandagiri et al.

Summary: The study investigated the energetics of flagella or cilia in mouse sperm. It found that a large portion of the mechanical power exerted by the dynein motors is dissipated internally, rather than in the aqueous medium outside. Additionally, the net power input from the dynein motors in sperm from Crisp2-knockout mice is significantly smaller than in wildtype samples.

Curvature in the reproductive tract alters sperm-surface interactions

Mohammad Reza Raveshi et al.

Summary: The curvature of the fallopian tube influences sperm motion, switching the mode of movement from faster surface alignment to prolonged interaction with the epithelium to enhance sperm maturation and fertilization competence. This dynamic switch in sperm motility was revealed using droplet microfluidics technology.

Flagellar Cooperativity and Collective Motion in Sperm

Julie Simons et al.

Summary: The study modeled planar motion of flagella in groups and found that collective motion of free-swimming flagella is unstable in long-term simulations. However, collective swimming can result in significant gains in velocity and efficiency. The ability for sperm to attach and swim together as a group can further increase velocities and efficiencies.
