The present work discusses the application of damping for friction-influenced dynamic systems to inhibit stick-slip vibrations. The study presents a novel approach to determine the critical damping value to ensure stick-slip free vibrations.
The present work discusses the application of damping for friction-influenced dynamic systems to inhibit stick-slip vibrations. The stick-slip can be eliminated from the system with an appropriate selection of system parameters like lower friction coefficient, lower value of the ratio of static to Coulomb friction, and higher driving velocity. Sometimes due to functional constraints, these parameters cannot be selected as per the will. The alternate approach is to embed the system with proper damping to ensure dynamics without stick-slip vibrations. Present work encapsulates this aspect viz. numerical simulation of a 1 DOF system by incorporating damping to obtain the responses in terms of displacement and velocity versus time plots. The study presents a noble approach to determine the value of damping critical in ensuring the stick-slip free vibrations.
