Formation and characteristics of composite reaction - Shock clusters in narrow channels

Hao-Wei Ssu et al.

Summary: High-speed schlieren visualizations show the formation of a composite reaction-shock cluster structure in a narrow channel for an ethylene/oxygen mixture prior to detonation transition. The reaction front propagating velocity at the inception of the cluster is approximately 45-50% of the mixture's Chapman-Jouguet detonation velocity. The angle between parallel oblique shocks in the cluster and the side wall, defined as the ?-angle, is found to be constant for a specific mixture as the reaction wave propagates.
