Applying heat flux method to laminar burning velocity measurements of NH3/CH4/air at elevated pressures and kinetic modeling study

Shixing Wang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the combustion of NH3 blended fuels under elevated pressure conditions and proposes a new kinetic mechanism (CEU-NH3-Mech-1.1) based on experimental results. The new mechanism shows good predictability for laminar flame speed, ignition delay time, and species concentration in ammonia oxidation at high temperatures. Additionally, the study reveals the variation of pressure exponent with ammonia content and its role in validating kinetic mechanisms.

An experimental and modeling study of ammonia pyrolysis

Sulaiman A. Alturaifi et al.

Summary: Ammonia (NH3) is a promising carbon-free fuel and hydrogen carrier. Experimental and numerical studies on the chemical kinetics of NH3 have been conducted in various systems. This study specifically focused on NH3 chemical kinetics in a simple pyrolysis system, where shock-tube experiments were used to investigate the reaction profiles. The proposed chemical kinetics mechanism showed excellent agreement with the experimental results and literature data, highlighting the importance of understanding NH3 pyrolysis reactions for high-temperature oxidation chemistry.

Experimental and modeling study on the auto-ignition properties of ammonia/methane mixtures at elevated pressures

B. Shu et al.

Summary: Ammonia (NH3) is a promising carbon-free energy carrier for energy and transportation systems, but its low flammability and high NOx emission potential hinder its pure implementation. Methane can be used as a co-firing fuel with ammonia to enhance reactivity and control emissions. This study investigates the ignition properties of NH3/CH4 mixtures at intermediate temperatures and elevated pressures, revealing that higher CH4 mole fractions increase reactivity and reactivity decreases with higher fuel-oxygen equivalence ratios. Comparing experimental data with existing mechanisms, a modified mechanism is proposed for better reproduction of measurements.

An experimental and modeling study of ammonia with enriched oxygen content and ammonia/hydrogen laminar flame speed at elevated pressure and temperature

Krishna Prasad Shrestha et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the laminar flame speeds of ammonia and ammonia-hydrogen blends under different temperature, pressure, and oxygen content conditions, and developed a new kinetic model for predicting the oxidation mechanisms, considering the formation and reduction of nitrogen oxides. The results showed that the laminar flame speed increases with increasing initial temperature, fuel hydrogen content, or oxidizer oxygen content, but decreases with increasing initial pressure. The proposed kinetic model predicts the same trends as experiments and highlights the importance of N2H2 formation under rich conditions.

Ammonia-methane interaction in jet-stirred and flow reactors: An experimental and kinetic modeling study

Suphaporn Arunthanayothin et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical studies investigated the influence of ammonia addition on methane oxidation, showing that NH3 promoted CH4 reactivity at temperatures below 1200K but had less impact at higher temperatures. A kinetic model helped explain the underlying causes of methane reactivity at low temperatures and the significant role of NOx. The reactivity at higher temperatures was mainly governed by H-abstractions on both fuels.

Summary: This paper presents a study on premixed laminar ammonia/methane/air flames through experiments and numerical simulations. The research aims to understand flame structures and NO formation, as well as determine the laminar flame speed under various conditions.
