Cell-free DNA screening for trisomies 21, 18, and 13 in pregnancies at low and high risk for aneuploidy with genetic confirmation

Pe'er Dar et al.

Summary: This study measured and compared the performance of cell-free DNA screening for trisomies 21, 18, and 13 between women at a low and high risk for aneuploidy. The results showed that in women at a low risk for aneuploidy, cell-free DNA screening has high sensitivity and specificity. Patients who receive a no-call result are at an increased risk of aneuploidy and require additional investigation.

Cell-free DNA screening for prenatal detection of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome

Pe'er Dar et al.

Summary: Noninvasive cell-free DNA prenatal screening for 22q11.2 deletion syndrome can detect most affected cases, including smaller nested deletions, with a low false positive rate.

Systematic evidence-based review: The application of noninvasive prenatal screening using cell-free DNA in general-risk pregnancies

Nancy C. Rose et al.

Summary: This systematic evidence review evaluates the performance of noninvasive prenatal screening (NIPS) in a general-risk population. The study found that NIPS is highly accurate in detecting T21, T18, and T13 in both singleton and twin pregnancies, as well as sex chromosome aneuploidies. However, the performance for rare autosomal trisomies and copy number variants varied, and there was a lack of data on psychosocial outcomes.

Cell-free DNA testing of maternal blood in screening for trisomies in twin pregnancy: updated cohort study at 10-14 weeks and meta-analysis

H. Judah et al.

Summary: In twin pregnancies, cfDNA testing shows a high detection rate for trisomy 21, lower than in singleton pregnancies, and the cases of trisomy 18 and 13 are too few to accurately assess the predictive performance of the test.

Multifetal Gestations: Twin, Triplet, and Higher-Order Multifetal Pregnancies ACOG Practice Bulletin, Number 231

Edward J. Hayes

Summary: The incidence of multifetal gestations in the United States has significantly increased in the past few decades, especially for twin and triplet and higher-order multifetal gestations. This increase is partly attributed to older maternal age at conception and the widespread use of assisted reproductive technology. Multiple gestations are associated with various perinatal complications, with one of the most serious being preterm birth and its related infant health issues.

Cell-free DNA testing of maternal blood in screening for trisomies in twin pregnancy: updated cohort study at 10-14 weeks and meta-analysis

H. Judah et al.

Summary: In twin pregnancy, cell-free DNA (cfDNA) testing has a high detection rate (DR) for trisomy 21, but limited accuracy for trisomy 18 and 13, with low false-positive rates (FPR).
