Anomalous weathering trends indicate accelerated erosion of tropical basaltic landscapes during the Permo-Triassic warming

Jianghai Yang et al.

Summary: Weathering of basalt in tropical environments is sensitive to climate change, as indicated by a significant decrease in weathering intensity during the Permo-Triassic transition despite climate warming trends. The massive erosion in the Early Triassic is likely linked to amplified extreme precipitation associated with intensification of the hydrological cycle in the Early Triassic hothouse climate. This study highlights the weathering responses of tropical landscapes to rapid climate warming.

Extending full-plate tectonic models into deep time: Linking the Neoproterozoic and the Phanerozoic

Andrew S. Merdith et al.

Summary: Recent progress in plate tectonic reconstructions has expanded beyond continental drift to reconstruct the full evolving configuration of tectonic plates and plate boundaries. A continuous full-plate model spanning 1 billion years to present-day has been developed, incorporating a revised model for the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian period and connecting it with models of the Phanerozoic. The model is geologically constrained and based on preserved data from past plate boundaries, with the goal of providing a detailed and self-consistent tectonic reconstruction for the last billion years of Earth's history.

Revisiting the Nantuo Formation in Shennongjia, South China: A new depositional model and multiple glacial cycles in the Cryogenian

Xiaoshuai Chen et al.

Summary: Sedimentary logging of the Nantuo Formation in the Shennongjia area revealed four different facies, which allowed for the determination of ice advance-retreat cycles in the region. The study identified three glacial advance systems tracts and retreat systems tracts, as well as proposed a transitional type of glacier between temperate and polythermal based on sedimentology analysis.

A chemical weathering control on the delivery of particulate iron to the continental shelf

Guang-Yi Wei et al.

Summary: The delivery of potentially reactive iron minerals to the marine environment plays a significant role in ocean and marine sediment biogeochemistry. Studying sediment samples from the eastern coast of China revealed elevated levels of highly reactive iron in sediments deposited from chemically-weathered mountainous regions in subtropical or tropical areas. The sediments from the South China Sea indicate a positive correlation between the reactivity of iron and the intensity of chemical weathering.
