The Ageing Effect on Static and Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composites under Marine Environment- A Review

Dayananda Shreepannaga et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in marine structures as a solution to the deterioration caused by moisture. The study highlights the degradation of FRP properties when exposed to seawater and other aging media. The research identifies the need for further investigation into the dynamic properties of FRP after prolonged moisture exposure.

Influence of hygrothermal ageing on the mechanical properties of unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced powder epoxy composites

Dimitrios Mamalis et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the effect of seawater ageing on the mechanical properties of composites made with three types of unidirectional carbon fibers and a novel powder epoxy system. The results showed a significant strength reduction in composites due to seawater ageing, primarily influenced by differences in interfacial adhesion and moisture uptake. Additionally, Finite Element analysis and scanning electron microscopy revealed insights into important modeling parameters and the effects of seawater ageing on the materials.

Effects of hygrothermal environment on the shear behavior of composite stiffened panels

Binlin Ma et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of hygrothermal conditions on the shear behaviors of composite stiffened panels, establishing a new moisture absorption model and proposing a simplified, semi-analytical method to predict critical buckling load. Hygrothermal aging leads to structural changes and reduced load-bearing capacity, with aged specimens showing decreased buckling and failure loads. The proposed method shows good agreement with FEM and experimental results.

Experimental investigation on fatigue behaviour of glass/epoxy quasi-isotropic laminate composites under different ageing conditions

N. H. Padmaraj et al.

Summary: The study revealed that fatigue damage growth depends on ageing conditions and percentage of moisture content. Multiple cracks, interfiber debonding, and matrix decomposition from the fiber surface are responsible for the deterioration of fatigue properties.

Hygrothermal aging mechanism of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites based on quantitative characterization of interface structure

Yi-Fan Niu et al.

Summary: The study used PF-QNM technology to quantitatively characterize the interface structure and properties of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites in situ, finding that the hygrothermal aging process can be divided into three stages, with different changes in interface size and properties at each stage.

Hygrothermal aging behavior and aging mechanism of carbon nanofibers/epoxy composites

Yanlei Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that adding an appropriate amount of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) into epoxy resin can significantly improve the hygrothermal aging behavior of the composites, as CNFs can enhance the water barrier properties of the composites.

Dimensional stability and mechanical performance evolution of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 composites under hygrothermal environment

Yongpeng Lei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the evolution and mechanisms of performance of CF/PA6 composites under a hygrothermal environment, revealing that after hygrothermal aging, the transverse tensile properties of the materials significantly decreased while the longitudinal tensile properties remained insensitive. Various analytical tests were conducted to analyze the degradation mechanism of mechanical properties.
