Waste and natural fiber based automotive brake composite materials: Influence of slag and coir on tribological performance

R. Rajan et al.

Summary: The study found that as the slag waste content decreased and coir fiber content increased, the density, hardness, strength, etc. of the friction composite materials showed a decreasing trend, while porosity and compressibility showed an increasing trend. At the same time, the friction materials mixed in different combinations showed differences in friction, degradation, recovery, and wear performance.

Full-scale dynamometer tests of composite railway brake shoes including latxa sheep wool fibers

Pablo Monreal-Perez et al.

Summary: The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of incorporating natural sheep wool into railway brake blocks and compare it with commonly used organic fibers. The results show that organic fibers contribute to a more stable braking performance and lower friction in wet conditions. Sheep wool performs better than cellulose in terms of wear rates. However, no conclusive findings can be drawn regarding metal pick-up. Life Cycle Assessment indicates that sheep wool brake blocks have lower environmental impacts compared to the base material or aramid fibers. Overall, sheep wool offers a good balance between cost, wear rates, and environmental impact, making it a viable substitute for cellulose fibers.

Effect of the steel fiber length on the friction performance and wear mechanism of railway brake shoes

Pablo Monreal-Pwrez et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the effect of steel fiber length on the friction performance and wear mechanism of brake shoes. The results show that a higher content of fibers shorter than 0.125 mm improves friction stability, reduces friction coefficient, and wear rate. Regardless of fiber length, the wear mechanism remains the same. However, shorter steel fibers detaching less frequently from the brake surface lead to significant differences in friction and wear. Furthermore, material transference from the wheel to the brake block is confirmed.

Tribological performance of eco-friendly friction materials with rice husk

G. S. Gehlen et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the tribological behavior of new eco-friendly brake friction materials with rice husk. Different formulations with varying rice husk content were tested under different temperatures. The results show that rice husk has a positive effect on wear resistance at 300 degrees, but its organic compounds degrade at 550 degrees, leading to material fade. The formulation with 6% rice husk performs the best, showing the lowest wear, as the effect of silica outweighs the degradation of organic compounds.

Optimum design based on fabricated natural fiber reinforced automotive brake friction composites using hybrid CRITIC-MEW approach

Tej Singh

Summary: In this study, a hybrid criteria importance and optimization approach was applied to select an optimal brake friction formulation. Experimental results showed composition-dependent performance attributes, making it difficult to prioritize formulations. The multi-criteria decision-based optimization approach CRITIC-MEW suggested that a 5% ramie fiber added composite satisfies the maximum preset performance criteria.
