Structure and morphology of thermoplastic polyamide 6 elastomers with different soft segment content and their foaming behavior using supercritical CO2

Xiuping Li et al.

Summary: This study synthesized Thermoplastic polyamide elastomers (TPAEs) with superior mechanical and thermal properties, and investigated the impact of crystallization property and microphase separation on their foaming behavior. The variation in molecular weight of the soft segment affected the cell size and density of the foamed TPAEs at different temperatures.

Recent progress in micro-/nano-fibrillar reinforced polymeric composite foams

Chongxiang Zhao et al.

Summary: A novel method of making microcellular foams with micro-/nano-fibrillar reinforced polymeric composites (M/NFC) is introduced in this work, which offers improved cellular structures, excellent mechanical properties, and enhanced thermal insulation properties compared to conventional foams. The incorporation of micro-/nano-size fibrils strengthens the melt strength, induces faster crystallization, and improves the mechanical properties of the reinforced foams, making them ideal for structural applications and insulative products.

Preparation and properties of thermoplastic polyurethane foams with bimodal structure based on TPU/PDMS blends

Bozhen Wu et al.

Summary: Aiming to fabricate polymer foams with bimodal structures remains challenging in both industrial and academic fields. By mixing PDMS into TPU and utilizing the foaming dynamics difference between the two materials, foams with distinct bimodal structures were successfully prepared. These bimodal structure foams exhibit excellent compressive strength and modulus, as well as higher sound insulation compared to foams with uniform structures.

Microcellular foaming of poly(lactic acid) branched with food-grade chain extenders

Krishnaa B. Venkatesan et al.

Summary: The study found that low epoxy equivalent weight (EEW) chain extenders (CE) were more effective than high EEW CE in branching PLA, resulting in improved cell structure uniformity and foam expansion. Adding 0.25% CE could provide the appropriate melt viscosity to produce optimum quality PLA foam.

Relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of polyether block amide foams

Esteve Ernault et al.

Summary: The mechanical behaviors of five polyether block amide foams obtained by mold-opening foam injection process were investigated based on their microstructures, which were characterized in terms of cavity size and shape ratios. The foam responses in compression at small and large strain were analyzed, showing that the hard versus soft segments ratio and microstructure fineness play important roles. Viscoelasticity at large strain was characterized, with reduced packing time and pressure leading to undesired large cavities impacting the mechanical behavior of the foams at large strain.

Sustainable polyamide elastomers from a bio-based dimer diamine for fabricating highly expanded and facilely recyclable microcellular foams via supercritical CO2 foaming

Yi-Huan Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a sustainable polyamide foam system was developed using a bio-based dimer diamine monomer to synthesize a new series of polyamide elastomers. The introduction of the branched-structured dimer diamine monomer effectively enhanced nucleation sites for cell growth and melt strength, overcoming traditional polyamide 6 foaming difficulties. The foam system showed high expansion ratio and robust dimensional stability, with the added benefit of being recyclable and reprocessable due to non-crosslinking and additive-free properties.
