Zinc-doped ferrite nanoparticles as magnetic recyclable catalysts for scale-up glycolysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate) wastes

Yanyan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetically isolable zinc ferrite nanoparticles (Zn-MNPs) were prepared and fabricated to achieve higher catalytic activity in PET glycolysis. The substitution of zinc into the spinel structure of Fe3O4 significantly enhanced the catalytic selectivity and active sites in PET glycolysis. PET chains experienced a strong nucleophilic attack under Zn-MNPs catalysis, resulting in high monomer yield and PET degradation, with the recovered catalysts being reusable.

The upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate using protic ionic liquids as catalyst

Tianlin Wang et al.

Summary: The recycling of waste PET is important for mitigating environmental pollution and resource depletion. In this study, a series of protic ionic liquids were synthesized and used as catalysts for PET glycolysis. The effects of different anions on the reaction were investigated, and it was found that anions with an electron donating group showed the best activity. The protic ionic liquids demonstrated excellent catalytic performance and could be reused multiple times.

Chemolytic depolymerisation of PET: a review

Elaine Barnard et al.

Summary: Developing new methods for plastic recycling is crucial for reducing CO2 emissions and improving resource efficiency. Chemical recycling, which involves depolymerization to reclaim original components, is gaining attention as a viable route. Lowering the energy barrier for depolymerization through catalysts under mild conditions is a key focus of research in this field.
