Promoted formation of stereocomplex in enantiomeric poly(lactic acid)s induced by cellulose nanofibers

Qian Ren et al.

Summary: The addition of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) significantly reduced the half-crystallization time of the PLLA/PDLA blend, and when 3% modified CNFs were incorporated, almost exclusively SC crystallites were formed with no HC crystallite presence. This was speculated to be due to enhanced interchain molecular interactions between CNFs and PLA, presenting a feasible and efficient method for producing high-performance PLA materials with exclusively SC crystallites.

A review on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes as a new multipurpose nanohybrid additive for poly(lactic acid) and poly(lactic acid) hybrid composites

Muhammad Saeed Ullah et al.

Summary: The production of petroleum-based polymers poses a threat to the ecosystem and oil reserves, leading researchers to explore the use of biodegradable polymers as an alternative. However, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), considered the most suitable substitute, has limitations such as slow crystallization rate, low thermal stability, high brittleness, and low toughness. To overcome these deficiencies, researchers have developed techniques like blending with other polymers or using nanofillers, with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) being the most promising nanofiller. This article reviews investigations on incorporating POSS into PLA or PLA blends, comparing the improved composites with neat PLA in terms of mechanical, morphological, and physical properties.

Effect of hydroxyl and carboxyl-functionalized carbon nanotubes on phase morphology, mechanical and dielectric properties of poly(lactide)/poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) composites

Summary: A series of poly(lactide)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) composites containing different types of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were fabricated. The addition of a multifunctional epoxy oligomer (ADR) improved the compatibility between PBAT and PLA. The introduction of hydroxyl-functionalized CNTs at the PLA/PBAT interface and the inhibition effect of carboxyl-functionalized CNTs on chain extension reaction affected the interaction force between PLA and PBAT. The PLA/PBAT composite with hydroxyl-functionalized CNTs showed stronger interaction and better mechanical and dielectric properties.
