Metal-free, in bulk synthesis of highly hydrophilic polyester bearing pyrrolidone pendants and its diblock copolymers with UCST-type phase transition in water

Huanting Li et al.

Summary: This article introduces a new type of polymer that combines high hydrophilicity and high hydrolytic sensitivity by introducing pyrrolidone pendant groups into polyesters. The synthesis of functionalized lactones is achieved through thiol-ene click ligation and oxidation reactions under specific conditions. It is found that a strong Bronsted superacid can promote the polymerization reaction, and the addition of diphenylphosphate improves the control of the reaction. The resulting functional polyesters exhibit high hydrophilicity and hydrolytic sensitivity, and their amphiphilic block copolymers undergo a sharp and concentration-independent UCST phase transition in pure water.

Morphological control and interfacial compatibilization of fully biobased PLA/ENR blends via partial crosslinking ENR with sebacic acid

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel strategy to tailor the phase morphology and interfacial adhesion of the PLA/ENR blend by partially crosslinking ENR with sebacic acid. The partially crosslinked sebacic acid modified ENRs (mENRs) were prepared by mixing ENR with SA and a catalyst. The phase morphology and interfacial adhesion of the PLA/mENR blend were finely tuned by adjusting the crosslinking degree of mENR. The resulting PLA/mENR blend exhibited drastically enhanced toughness compared to neat PLA, following a toughening mechanism of internal mENR cavitation-induced matrix shear yielding and plastic deformation.

Toughening Poly(L-lactide) Blends: Effectiveness of Sequence-Controlled Six-Arm Star-Branched Block Copolymers of Poly(L-lactide) and Poly(ε-caprolactone)

Megha D. Deokar et al.

Summary: Well-defined six-arm star-branched bio-degradable block copolymers were prepared using controlled ring-opening polymerization and a sequential monomer addition method. The study found that the sequence of enchainment could be changed by reversing the order of monomer addition, resulting in different crystalline or amorphous blocks. However, disruption of the block structure was observed in one of the copolymers due to competing transesterification reactions. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed interesting phase morphologies in these sequence-controlled block copolymers. Blending these copolymers with a commercially sourced polymer led to improved tensile toughness in the blend.

Supertough poly(lactic acid)/bio-polyurethane blends fabricated by dynamic self-vulcanization of dual difunctional monomers

Ning Chen et al.

Summary: This work presents a facile and efficient strategy for toughening poly(lactic acid) (PLA) by in-situ forming crosslinked bio-polyurethane (PCPUE) phase. By adjusting the ratio of complementary functional groups between the toughening monomers, the notched impact strength and phase morphologies of PLA blends can be tailored. The optimized interfacial compatibility and crosslinking density were considered responsible for the remarkable improvement in impact toughness.
