Zero-Entropy-Production Melting Temperature of Crystals of Poly(butylene succinate) Formed at High Supercooling of the Melt

Rui Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that crystal reorganization during crystallization is the sole reason for multiple melting peaks in semicrystalline poly(butylene succinate) (PBS). It was also revealed that there is no formation of different crystal populations in the isothermal crystallization process. Quantitative evaluation showed that the zero-entropy-production melting range of nonreorganized crystals begins only a few Kelvin above the crystallization temperature.

Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS): Materials, processing, and industrial applications

Massimiliano Barletta et al.

Summary: The development of biodegradable and compostable materials, such as polybutylene succinate (PBS), as alternatives to fossil-based plastics is highly important. PBS is a compostable aliphatic polyester with good mechanical strength and thermal resistance. However, it is often blended with other polymers, fillers, and additives to improve processability and mechanical performance. Recent advances in polymer blending processes have made PBS blends an interesting material platform for applications requiring a balance of mechanical strength, flexibility, thermal resistance, and compostability.

Poly(l-Lactic Acid)/Poly(Butylene Succinate) Biobased Biodegradable Blends

Maria Laura Di Lorenzo

Summary: PLLA and PBS are biodegradable, compostable, and biocompatible polymers that have complementary properties, making blending them an opportunity to exploit their favorable characteristics. However, research on the properties of PLLA/PBS blends has yielded contradictory results, creating complexity in their utilization.

The Narrow Thickness Distribution of Lamellae of Poly(butylene succinate) Formed at Low Melt Supercooling

Christoph Schick et al.

Summary: Crystallization of PBS at 100 degrees C allowed for the analysis of crystal melting behavior, showing a narrow distribution of lamellae thickness and low stabilization factor. The study also revealed the presence of reversible melting and a large fraction of crystalline phase at the stability limit. Analysis of the kinetics of irreversible melting showed superheating-dependent rate constants of the order of magnitude of 102 s(-1) above the zero-entropy-production melting temperature, indicating inherently low thermodynamic stability of polymer crystals grown at low melt supercooling.

Fractionated crystallization in semicrystalline polymers

Leire Sangroniz et al.

Summary: This study investigates fractionated crystallization, where multiple separated crystallization events are observed in semicrystalline polymers when the number of microdomains is significantly higher than the available number of heterogeneities. The origins of fractionated crystallization effects and their impact on nucleation and crystallization kinetics are discussed.
