Summary: This study found that DLCO and respiratory symptoms tend to normalize or improve one year after hospitalization for COVID-19 in most patients. However, about one-third of patients will need prolonged follow-up for persistent respiratory changes.

Summary: A predictive clinical model based on CXR, mMRC, oximetry, and spirometry data has been proposed to accurately screen patients with lung lesions after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The model is simple, accessible, and low-cost, making it suitable for early detection of COVID-19 sequelae.

Summary: Post-COVID lung impairment and diseases are significant public health concerns in the COVID-19 pandemic. Respiratory symptoms, such as post-COVID fibrosis or diffuse parenchymal lung disease, can be caused by various etiological factors. This study reviewed existing evidence on radiological, physiological, and histopathological aspects of post-COVID lung diseases by searching English literature in the PubMed database. The authors provided guidance on evaluating these patients and highlighted management considerations, including general care, pulmonary rehabilitation, and lung transplantation. Gaps in knowledge and ongoing research, particularly regarding drug therapies like corticosteroids and antifibrotics, were also discussed.

Summary: The study described the common clinical sequelae in COVID-19 survivors discharged from the hospital for more than 3 months, including general symptoms, respiratory symptoms, cardiovascular-related symptoms, psychosocial symptoms, and alopecia. Female patients were more likely to experience physical decline/fatigue, postactivity polypnoea, and alopecia.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the long-term health consequences of discharged COVID-19 patients and associated risk factors, particularly disease severity. Patients with more severe illness during hospitalization showed more severe impaired pulmonary diffusion capacities and abnormal chest imaging manifestations, highlighting the need for targeted interventions for long-term recovery.

Summary: The study found that over one-third of severe COVID-19 patients showed fibrotic-like changes in the lung at 6-month follow-up CT, which were associated with older age, acute respiratory distress syndrome, longer hospital stays, tachycardia, noninvasive mechanical ventilation, and higher initial chest CT score.

Summary: The study examined the prevalence of lung function, exercise function, and psychological sequelae among survivors of severe COVID-19 four months after discharge. Over half of patients experienced reduced lung capacity, one-fifth had functional impairment, and about one-fifth showed symptoms of posttraumatic stress. These findings suggest that a significant proportion of COVID-19 survivors may continue to experience respiratory, functional, or psychological issues months after hospital discharge.

Summary: Many COVID-19 survivors experience persistent symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness, and myalgia after discharge, with a prevalence of post-covid pulmonary fibrosis (PCF) at 9.5%. Risk factors for PCF include persistent breathlessness, inpatient ventilation, male gender, and certain laboratory and imaging findings. Ventilation is also associated with persisting fatigue and myalgia.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, causing global healthcare crises. Recovery from COVID-19 may lead to persistent symptoms and long-term complications, prompting the need for multidisciplinary care and follow-up for survivors.

Summary: Long COVID-19 refers to patients who continue to have signs and symptoms four weeks after the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with an estimated frequency of around 10%. The long-term manifestations are similar to other coronaviruses like SARS and MERS, mainly affecting the respiratory, musculoskeletal, and neuropsychiatric systems. Managing long COVID-19 requires a structured primary care approach, multidisciplinary rehabilitation services, and empowerment of affected patient groups based on limited evidence.

Summary: Most patients recovering from severe COVID-19 showed improvement in dyspnoea scores and exercise capacity over time, but a subgroup of patients still exhibited persistent physiological and radiographic changes at 12 months post-discharge. A unified pathway for respiratory follow-up is needed for COVID-19 patients.

Summary: There is limited understanding of the risk factors, histopathology, and pathophysiology of post-COVID-19 pulmonary fibrosis. Serial clinical screening for pulmonary fibrosis is recommended after COVID-19, and further research is needed to determine the risk factors and appropriate management of post-COVID-19 pulmonary fibrosis.

Summary: This study found that survivors of COVID-19 pneumonia often experience impaired lung function at three months, even in patients with mild initial disease, with significantly lower function in those with residual CT lesions. Steroids do not seem to impact functional and radiological recovery. Long-term follow-up is necessary.

Summary: This study aims to prospectively observe over 3000 surviving COVID-19 inpatients through multidisciplinary assessments at 6-9 months and 12-15 months post-discharge. It seeks to provide insights into the frequency and severity of chronic/post-COVID multiorgan symptoms, as well as their interrelationships with acute disease features, sociodemographic variables, and environmental exposures. The findings will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals and scientific meetings, with a data repository for future pathophysiological investigations using biomarker data.
