The Effect of the Addition of Electrolyte Solutions on the Ferning Patterns of Tears Collected from Normal Eye Subjects

Improvement in Tear Ferning Patterns of Sheep Tears After Addition of Various Electrolyte Solutions

Summary: By adding various electrolyte solutions, particularly calcium chloride or magnesium chloride solutions, to sheep tears, there was a significant improvement in tear ferning grades. Some improvements were also seen by adding sodium dihydrogen phosphate or potassium chloride as the electrolyte. Divalent electrolytes, such as calcium chloride, exhibited a greater enhancement in tear ferning grades compared to monovalent electrolytes like sodium dihydrogen phosphate.
