Persistently high SARS-CoV-2 positivity rate and incidence for Hispanic/Latinos during state reopening in an urban setting: a retrospective cohort study

Summary: Hispanic/Latino populations in the United States are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, and the effects of state reopening on this group are still unknown. A study at a federally qualified health centre in Providence, Rhode Island found that urban Hispanic/Latino populations had a much higher risk of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 compared to non-Hispanic Whites during all phases of reopening. Ugent public health interventions are needed to address the virus in Hispanic/Latino communities.

Summary: This study reveals that there are racial, economic, and health disparities in the population infected by and dying from COVID-19 in the United States. Factors such as diverse demographics, education levels, income levels, poverty rates, and disabilities contribute to the risk of infection and mortality. Urban areas may have better access to care, whereas higher poverty and disability rates in some counties may result in a lower infection rate but a higher death rate due to comorbidities and limited healthcare access.
