Midwives' views on alcohol guidelines: A qualitative study of barriers and facilitators to implementation in UK antenatal care

Lisa Scholin et al.

Summary: The study explored midwives' views on the implementation of the 2016 Chief Medical Officers' alcohol guidelines in antenatal care in the UK. Midwives faced barriers in discussing alcohol-related issues, such as conflicts between guidelines and lack of knowledge about abstinence advice, while communication and building relationships were key facilitators. Despite the release of new guidance, there was little recognition and awareness among midwives, who often followed other national clinical sources or guidelines.
