Impact of Pharmacological Treatments for Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria with an Inadequate Response to H1-Antihistamines on Health-Related Quality of Life: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis

Surapon Nochaiwong et al.

Summary: This study compared the impact of different treatments on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among H1-antihistamine-refractory patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria. The global burden of chronic urticaria for the patient and society

M. Goncalo et al.

Summary: Chronic urticaria (CU) affects about 1% of the global population, predominantly young and middle-aged women. It presents as chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), chronic inducible urticaria (CIndU), or a combination of both. CU has a significant impact on patients' health-related quality of life, with comorbidities such as anxiety and depression aggravating the impairment. Severe pruritus and unpredictable occurrences of weals and angio-oedema contribute to sleep disorders, sexual dysfunction, and limitations in daily life, work, and social activities.

Comparative Efficacy and Acceptability of Licensed Dose Second-Generation Antihistamines in Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria: A Network Meta-Analysis

Phichayut Phinyo et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy and acceptability of licensed dose second-generation H1-antihistamines in the treatment of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). Olopatadine, fexofenadine, bilastine, rupatadine, and levocetirizine were found to be more efficacious than placebo, and all included sgAHs were as acceptable as placebo. Further rigorous head-to-head trials are needed to confirm these findings due to the low quality of included studies.

Evaluation of Pharmacologic Treatments for H1 Antihistamine-Refractory Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria A Systematic Review and Network Meta-analysis

Surapon Nochaiwong et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis indicates that the biologic agents ligelizumab and omalizumab are recommended as effective treatments for patients with CSU who have had an inadequate response to H-1 antihistamines. Additional head-to-head trials with high quality and standardized design are needed to inform international guidelines for managing CSU in the future.
