Investigating the Impact of Multi-LiDAR Placement on Object Detection for Autonomous Driving

Hanjiang Hu et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in improving the perception performance of LiDARs on autonomous vehicles. This study focuses on the physical design perspective of LiDAR placement and introduces an easy-to-compute information-theoretic surrogate metric for evaluating LiDAR placement. A new data collection, detection model training, and evaluation framework is presented to evaluate different multi-LiDAR configurations. Extensive experiments show a correlation between the surrogate metric and object detection performance, validating the effectiveness of the LiDAR placement evaluation approach. The study highlights the non-negligible impact of sensor placement on 3D object detection performance.

3D Key-Points Estimation from Single-View RGB Images

Mohammad Zohaib et al.

Summary: This paper presents an approach that uses images to estimate an ordered list of 3D key-points. Unlike existing methods, it only requires a single-view RGB image. The approach includes three steps: extracting latent codes, computing pixel-wise features, and estimating 3D key-points. It can predict a different number of key-points based on the shape of an object. Experimental results show that this approach has a lower average angular distance error compared to KP-Net.
