Prevalence and patterns of maxillofacial trauma: a retrospective descriptive study

Summary: This study aimed to describe the prevalence and pattern of maxillofacial trauma in Qatar, finding that the majority of maxillofacial injuries occur in young males, primarily due to traffic accidents and falls. Orbital injuries were the most common, often associated with traumatic brain injuries. Around one-fifth of patients required surgery, with an overall in-hospital mortality rate of 8.3%.

This review investigated the causes, prevalence, and management of facial trauma, identifying road traffic accidents as the main cause of maxillofacial injury in patients. Mandibular fractures accounted for nearly half of the cases, with over half of all fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation. The high frequency of these treatments may be attributed to factors such as poorly maintained vehicles, traffic violations, alcohol abuse, and socio-cultural behaviors.
