Aetiology, prevalence, fracture site and management of maxillofacial trauma

S. Kanala et al.

Summary: Maxillofacial fractures often result in severe morbidity, functional deficit, disfigurement, and significant financial implications. This review investigated the causes, prevalence, and management of facial trauma, identifying road traffic accidents as the main cause of maxillofacial injury in patients. Mandibular fractures accounted for nearly half of the cases, with over half of all fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation. The high frequency of these treatments may be attributed to factors such as poorly maintained vehicles, traffic violations, alcohol abuse, and socio-cultural behaviors.
