Proxy Measures and Novel Strategies for Estimating Nitrogen Utilisation Efficiency in Dairy Cattle

Anna Lavery et al.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of nitrogen efficiency in dairy cow diets and the management of protein in feed and disease, as well as the accuracy of different testing methods in nitrogen utilization efficiency. The research found the use and advantages of some testing methods that can be used to monitor and improve nitrogen utilization efficiency.

Common and diet-specific metabolic pathways underlying residual feed intake in fattening Charolais yearling bulls

Ezequiel Jorge-Smeding et al.

Summary: Our study identified common mechanisms underlying RFI regardless of diet, such as greater lean body mass and nitrogen use efficiency, and lower protein turnover. However, specific differences were observed, with higher adiposity and BCAA concentrations in high-RFI animals fed a corn diet, while high RFI animals fed a grass diet showed higher plasma concentrations of BCAA and total triglycerides. These findings suggest diet-specific mechanisms driving RFI differences in Charolais yearling bulls.

An examination of skeletal muscle and hepatic tissue transcriptomes from beef cattle divergent for residual feed intake

Clare McKenna et al.

Summary: This study revealed 5 genes differentially expressed in skeletal muscle between high and low RFI heifers, all related to oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial homeostasis, and 11 genes differentially expressed in liver tissue between high and low RFI bulls, with genes related to amino and nucleotide metabolism as well as endoplasmic reticulum protein processing. Molecular control of RFI in young cattle appears to be modified according to gender, with potential differences in physiological maturity between heifers and bulls of the same age. Despite gender-related differences, several genes have been identified as potential molecular biomarkers for RFI cattle.

Plasma proteins δ15N vs plasma urea as candidate biomarkers of between-animal variations of feed efficiency in beef cattle: Phenotypic and genetic evaluation

P. Guarnido-Lopez et al.

Summary: This study validated the potential of plasma delta N-15 to predict between-animal variations in feed efficiency, while showing a lower correlation for plasma urea. Two dietary factors, including metabolisable protein to net energy ratio and rumen protein balance, influenced the relationship between plasma delta N-15 and feed efficiency variations.

Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplementation Alters the Abundance of Mechanistic Target of Rapamycin and Insulin Signaling Proteins in Subcutaneous Adipose Explants from Lactating Holstein Cows

Yusheng Liang et al.

Summary: Branched-chain amino acids can activate mTOR and insulin signaling in subcutaneous adipose tissue, leading to increased amino acid transport into tissues and reduced BCAA metabolism. Increasing BCAA supply may help improve the function of subcutaneous adipose tissue.
