Effect of the electric field profile on the accuracy of E-FISH measurements in ionization waves

Tat Loon Chng et al.

Summary: Electric field induced second harmonic (E-FISH) generation is a versatile tool for measuring electric field strengths in plasmas and gas discharges. This study investigates the dependence of the E-FISH signal on the length and shape of the electric field profile. The results show that the accuracy of an E-FISH measurement is generally high in the first and third phases of the electric field evolution, but poorer in the second phase. However, the overall shape of the field evolution curve can still be captured by E-FISH.

Study of the electric field in a diffuse nanosecond positive ionization wave generated in a pin-to-plane geometry in atmospheric pressure air

Anne Bourdon et al.

Summary: The dynamics of a nanosecond positive ionization front generated in a pin-to-plane geometry in atmospheric pressure air were simulated using a 2D axisymmetric drift-diffusion fluid model. The study showed that discharge ignition time and voltage at ignition depend mostly on the voltage rise time, while the connection time strongly relies on both the voltage plateau and rise time values.

Morphology of positive ionization waves in atmospheric pressure air: influence of electrode set-up geometry

Anne Bourdon et al.

Summary: A numerical parametric study on positive diffuse discharges in point-to-plane geometry in air at atmospheric pressure was conducted, examining various discharge characteristics. Factors such as ignition time, connection time to the grounded cathode plane, discharge shape, maximum radius, evolution of maximum electric field, and ionization front velocity were analyzed. The study found that the radius of curvature of the anode tip and shape of the anode electrode had minimal influence on discharge characteristics, while the presence of a disc holder or a small computational domain significantly affected the discharge radius and shape.

Effects of a negative corona discharge on subsequent positive streamers

Xing Zhang et al.

Summary: Positive streamers in air are significantly affected by corona discharges, resulting in shorter and weaker discharges or even prevention of initiation. On the other hand, in nitrogen, the impact of corona discharges on streamers is minimal. The differences in streamer behavior between air and nitrogen are attributed to the plasma shielding effect caused by corona discharges.

Comparing simulations and experiments of positive streamers in air: steps toward model validation

Xiaoran Li et al.

Summary: The authors compared simulations and experiments of single positive streamer discharges in air at 100 mbar, and found good qualitative agreement in terms of optical emission profiles, streamer velocity and radius between experiment and simulation. However, there were some quantitative differences, with the simulated streamer velocity being 20-30% lower and the simulated radius 20-30% smaller than the experimental values. The effects of various parameters on the agreement between model and experiment were studied, with an increase in gas temperature potentially accounting for some of the observed discrepancies.

Simulation of ionization-wave discharges: a direct comparison between the fluid model and E-FISH measurements

Yifei Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, numerical modeling and experimental measurements of diffusive and fast ionization wave discharge experiments were conducted, using E-FISH data and a classical fluid model. The classical fluid method was found to be capable of accurately modeling the inception, propagation, and breakdown stages of the ionization waves, achieving good agreement between calculation and measurement within its application range.
