Low-friction coatings on medical needles through atmospheric-pressure plasma-polymerization technology

Ignacio Muro-Fraguas et al.

Summary: The global needle market is growing due to factors such as an increase in the elderly population, rise in chronic diseases, and high demand for vaccines. To reduce insertion forces and improve accuracy, plasma-polymerized coatings were applied on spinal needles. The study found that N1-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine (TRIAP) was the most effective precursor in reducing insertion-extraction forces by 75% and 50% respectively for noncoated spinal needles.

Plasma Co-Polymerization of HMDSO and Limonene with an Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet

Gerrit Wulf et al.

Summary: In this study, plasma co-polymers were deposited using an atmospheric pressure plasma jet with a precursor mixture containing hexamethyldisiloxane and limonene, resulting in a coating with siloxane, carbonyl, and nitrogen functional groups. The flow rate of limonene was found to be a key parameter affecting the formation and structure of the co-polymers, with a higher flow rate leading to a higher proportion of carbon bound to silicon.

Studying the plasma-assisted polymerization at atmospheric pressure in Ar/TEOS by active laser diagnostics

Federica Barletta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the key processes in an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet containing Ar and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) through imaging and fluorescence spectroscopy of important discharge radicals. It focuses on the behavior of ground-state radicals' density with respect to applied voltage and Ar/TEOS mixing ratio, providing initial insights on precursor fragmentation mechanisms. The influence of precursor admixture and fragmentation on the kinetics of OH, CH radicals, and atomic oxygen is revealed.
