Disruptive neoclassical tearing mode seeding in DIII-D with implications for ITER

R. J. La Haye et al.

Summary: New studies have identified the critical parameters and physics governing the onset of disruptive neoclassical tearing mode (NTM). The research shows that an m/n = 2/1 mode can destabilize an otherwise stable NTM under certain conditions. These findings have important implications for future experiments such as ITER, providing guidance for control and prediction.

Recent progress in the interaction between energetic particles and tearing modes

Huishan Cai et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the interaction between energetic particles and tearing modes in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. The influence of energetic particles on tearing modes and the transport of energetic particles by tearing modes are discussed. The effects of energetic particles on tearing modes are described based on a general dispersion relation, while the transport of energetic particles is reviewed for both circulating and trapped particles. The importance of this interaction and open issues are also discussed.

Effect of the toroidal flow and flow shear on the m/n=2/1 tearing mode in J-TEXT tokamak

Junren Shao et al.

Summary: The study in J-TEXT tokamak reveals that the 2/1 tearing mode is significantly influenced by the toroidal flow during the bias phase, with the saturated island width of the tearing mode more correlated to the amplitude of the toroidal flow. This suggests that changing the magnitude of toroidal flow could be a possible method for stabilizing the tearing mode in fusion plasmas.

Experimental inference of flux tunneling between magnetic island chains in tokamaks

L. Bardoczi et al.

Summary: Confinement bifurcations in magnetic islands in toroidal plasmas are reported, caused by flux tunneling. This phenomenon occurs in 2/1 islands, triggered by decoupling of adjacent non-overlapping 5/2 islands. The temperature at the 2/1 O-point remains flat before but peaks after decoupling, indicating a bifurcation from stochastic to nested magnetic structure.

Neoclassical Tearing Mode Seeding by Nonlinear Three-Wave Interactions in Tokamaks

L. Bardoczi et al.

Summary: The experimental observation of seed magnetic island formation by nonlinear three-wave coupling of magnetic island triplets is reported. In this experiment, disruptive 2,1 islands are seeded by the coupling of 4,3 and 3,2 tearing modes to a central 1,1 sawtooth precursor. Three-wave interactions between these modes are conclusively identified by bispectral analysis, indicating fixed phase relationships in agreement with theory, with important implications for future reactors operating in stable plasma equilibria free of disruptive 2,1 islands.

Coriolis Force Effect on Suppression of Neo-Classical Tearing Mode Triggered Explosive Burst in Reversed Magnetic Shear Tokamak Plasmas

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: The Coriolis force has a significant impact on the suppression of explosive bursts using rotation shear, reducing the required amplitude and broadening the radial range of effective rotation shear position. Placing the rotation shear between specific radial positions consistently proves to effectively suppress explosive bursts.
