Systematic analysis and comparison of CaLB genes reveal the functions of GhCaLB42 and GhCaLB123 in fiber development and abiotic stress in cotton

Shuiping Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, 196 GhCaLBs were identified and divided into five groups in Gossypium hirsutum. Whole-genome or segmental duplications contributed to the expansion of GhCaLBs. The Ka/Ks analysis showed that CaLBs experienced strong purification selection. Hormone regulated, stress-responsive, and growth and development cis-elements were detected in the promoter regions of GhCaLBs. Some GhCaLBs were preferentially expressed in ovule or fiber. GhCaLB42 promoted fiber elongation, while GhCaLB123 inhibited elongation but promoted secondary cell wall (SCW) thickening in fiber.

Genome-wide characterization and expression analysis of cystathionine β-synthase genes in plant development and abiotic stresses of cotton (Gossypium spp.)

Faiza Ali et al.

Summary: This study identified 237 CBS genes in cotton and categorized them into four groups through phylogenetic analysis. The expansion of the GhCBS gene family was mainly attributed to whole-genome or segmental with dispersed duplication events. Transcriptomic data and qRT-PCR validation revealed the critical role of some GhCBS genes in ovule development.

Potential of cotton for remediation of Cd-contaminated soils

Sivakoti Ramana et al.

Summary: The study found that cotton has a strong tolerance to cadmium, being able to grow in soil with a cadmium concentration of up to 200 mg/kg. Additionally, cotton was classified as an excluder rather than accumulator of cadmium, making it suitable for phytostabilization of cadmium-contaminated soils.

Qinqin Wang et al.

Summary: The study identified and analyzed the HMAD gene family in cotton, revealing significant differences in their expression levels in different tissues and developmental stages, as well as different cis-elements for abiotic stress. This provides important information for understanding the potential functions of HMAD genes in different species of cotton.

Arabidopsis HIPP proteins regulate endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation of CIOX proteins and cytokinin responses

Tianqi Guo et al.

Summary: Recent research shows that heavy metal-associated isoprenylated plant proteins interact with cytokinin-degrading proteins, playing a role in ER-associated degradation in plants. By regulating the levels of cytokinin-degrading proteins, these proteins indirectly affect cytokinin signaling activity and trigger typical morphological responses in plants.

Zinc finger transcription factor ZAT family genes confer multi-tolerances in Gossypium hirsutum L.

Yapeng Fan et al.

Summary: ZAT proteins are a plant-specific transcription factor family that plays a crucial role in plant growth, development, and stress resistance. Through whole genome identification, expression, and structure analysis, it was found that ZAT genes in cotton are involved in the response to different stresses via different mechanisms. Segmental duplication was identified as the main method for amplifying the cotton ZAT gene family, and GhZAT genes were found to contain cis-elements related to plant hormones and abiotic stress. The study also demonstrated the involvement of the GhZAT67 gene in the response to alkaline stress through gene silencing experiments.
