The evolutionarily conserved kinase SnRK1 orchestrates resource mobilization during Arabidopsis seedling establishment

Markus Henninger et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of the energy master regulator SnRK1 in seedling establishment in Arabidopsis thaliana, revealing its crucial function in resource mobilization and metabolic regulation. Specifically, SnRK1 promotes glucose utilization, regulates the breakdown of sucrose, triacylglycerols, and amino acids, and activates gene expression through phosphorylation of transcription factors.

Impaired KIN10 function restores developmental defects in the Arabidopsis trehalose 6-phosphate synthase1 (tps1) mutant

Vasiliki Zacharaki et al.

Summary: Sensing carbohydrate availability is crucial for plants. A study on Arabidopsis thaliana reveals the importance of T6P and SnRK1 in regulating plant growth and development. The catalytic subunit KIN10 plays a significant role in T6P signaling, while KIN11 does not. Additionally, identified point mutations in the regulatory subunit SNF4 disrupt its interaction with the catalytic subunit KIN10.

ABA represses TOR and root meristem activity through nuclear exit of the SnRK1 kinase

Borja Belda-Palazon et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) can regulate cell proliferation and root growth by modulating the subcellular localization of SNF1-RELATED KINASE 1 (SnRK1) in Arabidopsis thaliana. Under normal growth conditions, SnRK1 alpha 1 is localized in the nucleus, promoting cell proliferation and meristem size. However, in response to ABA, SnRK1 alpha 1 translocates to the cytoplasm, leading to the inhibition of TOR and reduced cell proliferation and meristem size. This suggests that the subcellular localization of SnRK1 is a crucial mechanism for plants to respond to environmental changes.

Mapping of the plant SnRK1 kinase signalling network reveals a key regulatory role for the class II T6P synthase-like proteins

Jelle Van Leene et al.

Summary: This study provides insights into the regulation and downstream target processes of SnRK1, a key metabolic regulator in plants. By utilizing different techniques, such as phosphoproteomics and affinity purification coupled to mass spectrometry, the study identifies the association of SnRK1 with metabolic enzymes, transcriptional regulators and intracellular trafficking. The findings suggest that plants utilize an extended kinase complex to fine-tune SnRK1 activity for optimal responses to metabolic stress.

Rising rates of starch degradation during daytime and trehalose 6-phosphate optimize carbon availability

Hirofumi Ishihara et al.

Summary: The degradation of starch in the light is regulated by mechanisms similar to those operating at night. The rate of degradation depends on the time relative to dawn rather than dusk. Trehalose 6-phosphate inhibits degradation in the light. Starch degradation in the light plays an important role in stabilizing carbon availability and signaling, optimizing plant growth in natural light conditions.

The Role of Trehalose 6-Phosphate (Tre6P) in Plant Metabolism and Development

Franziska Fichtner et al.

Summary: Tre6P functions as both a signal and homeostatic regulator of sucrose levels in plants, influencing developmental decisions related to future sucrose demand. Its interactions with SUCROSE-NON-FERMENTING1-RELATED KINASE1 are complex and not fully understood, while its synthesis and dephosphorylation processes involve enzymes that play crucial roles in coordinating sucrose supply and demand in plants.

Perturbations in plant energy homeostasis prime lateral root initiation via SnRK1-bZIP63-ARF19 signaling

Prathibha Muralidhara et al.

Summary: Plants adjust their energy metabolism to adapt to continuous environmental fluctuations, resulting in a high plasticity in their structure. In Arabidopsis, changes in photosynthetic activity lead to increased lateral root initiation, a response that requires the metabolic stress sensor kinase SnRK1.

Impact of the SnRK1 protein kinase on sucrose homeostasis and the transcriptome during the diel cycle

Bruno Peixoto et al.

Summary: Under favorable growth conditions, SnRK1 plays a role in sucrose homeostasis and transcriptome remodeling in autotrophic tissues, and its activity is influenced by diel fluctuations in trehalose 6-phosphate (Tre6P) levels. Daily changes in Tre6P levels impact the activity of the SnRK1 protein kinase, contributing to the maintenance of sucrose homeostasis and diel patterns of gene expression.
