Mechanisms of Abscisic Acid-Mediated Drought Stress Responses in Plants

Mehtab Muhammad Aslam et al.

Summary: Drought is a major constraint to rain-fed agricultural production, and understanding the mechanisms of ABA-mediated drought responses in plants is critical for ensuring crop yield and global food security. This review highlights the regulation of ABA perception, transcriptional levels of ABA- and drought-related genes, and metabolic pathways to alter drought stress responses in plants.

Phytohormones Trigger Drought Tolerance in Crop Plants: Outlook and Future Perspectives

Shehzad Iqbal et al.

Summary: Human activities have triggered global warming, causing drought stresses that affect both animals and plants. To minimize the impact of drought stress on plants, it is crucial to establish a plant feedback mechanism of resistance to drought. This mechanism includes physical and physiological changes as well as molecular processes such as signal transduction and reactive clearance of oxygen. Additionally, microorganisms and the application of certain substances play an important role in enhancing drought resistance in plants.

Transcription factors as key molecular target to strengthen the drought stress tolerance in plants

Mrinalini Manna et al.

Summary: In the face of global climate change, crop plants are threatened by various abiotic stress factors, with drought being the most calamitous stressor. The scientific community is focusing on developing climate-resilient crops to ensure food security for the growing population. Transcription factors play a crucial role in controlling gene expression and have great potential for crop improvement.

Imperative role of sugar signaling and transport during drought stress responses in plants

Harmeet Kaur et al.

Summary: The cellular sugar status is generally stable under normal conditions but is negatively impacted by environmental perturbations, particularly drought. Sugar transporters play a crucial role in regulating the influx and efflux of sugars, which is essential for plant growth and development. Drought stress leads to changes in sugar distribution and signaling, highlighting the critical role of sugar transport, distribution, and signaling in plants under drought conditions.

Abscisic Acid-Induced Stomatal Closure: An Important Component of Plant Defense Against Abiotic and Biotic Stress

Pulimamidi Bharath et al.

Summary: Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a multifaceted role under stress conditions, including plant defense through stomatal closure, interaction with other hormones, and promotion of long-term adaptive measures. The rise in signaling components triggered by ABA can lead to additional events involved in protecting the cell, triggering defense responses, and delaying pathogen spread and infection within leaves. Stomatal closure and other ABA influences are crucial early steps in defense mechanisms and important components of plants' innate immunity response. Further research on ABA-induced stomatal closure mechanism can aid in designing strategies for plant/crop adaptations to stress.

Galactinol synthase confers salt-stress tolerance by regulating the synthesis of galactinol and raffinose family oligosaccharides in poplar

Ling Liu et al.

Summary: Plants respond to abiotic stress through transcriptional and metabolic adjustments, with Raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs) and the key enzyme galactinol synthase (GolS) playing crucial roles. The GolS of Populus trichocarpa shares common features with GolS proteins in other plants and contains stress-responsive elements in its promoter region. Overexpressing AtGolS2 and PtrGolS3 in poplar enhances stress tolerance and increases the accumulation of stress-related metabolites, suggesting these genes as potential candidates for improving abiotic stress tolerance in woody plants.

Flower and pod genes involved in soybean sensitivity to drought

Mayla Daiane Correa Molinari et al.

Summary: In this study, drought responses in soybean cultivar BR16 at stages R2 and R4 were investigated, revealing a decrease in gas exchange parameters and impaired yield under water-deficit conditions. Differential gene expression analysis showed that most DEGs were down-regulated in flowers but up-regulated in pods, with changes in hormone biosynthesis triggered by drought. Mechanisms such as decreased glyceollin levels and cell wall instability were observed, indicating tissue-specific responses correlated with traits such as drought escape and loss in grain weight.
