Grain micronutrient evaluation of wheat (Triticum aestivum) germplasm and molecular characterisation via genic and random SSR markers

Mohd Tahir et al.

Summary: Micronutrient deficiency is a widespread problem globally, and this study evaluated 63 advanced bread wheat breeding lines for grain iron and zinc concentrations. Genetic analysis using SSR markers revealed different allele numbers in subpopulations with low and high GFe-GZn genotypes. Hierarchical clustering based on genic markers identified distinct groups with low and high GFe-GZn genotypes, showing the potential for future wheat biofortification programs.

Molecular diversity and nutriment studies of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) from the two hot-spots of Western Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir

Neeraj Choudhary et al.

Summary: The Western Himalayan region of India is known for its diverse microclimatic belts, which are hotspots for the genetic diversity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). In this study, genetic and allelic diversity among and within populations from the Jammu and Kashmir regions of the Western Himalayas were assessed using genomic SSR markers. The analysis revealed higher genetic diversity in bean landraces from the Jammu region compared to genotypes from the Kashmir region and some exotic genotypes. Additionally, the phenotypic analysis of important nutritional traits showed variations among genotypes, with the Jammu region having higher sugar content and exotic genotypes having higher protein, starch, and phenol content. These findings suggest the importance of allelic diversity and regional differences in shaping the nutritional qualities of common bean varieties.

Assessment of molecular genetic diversity of 384 chickpea genotypes and development of core set of 192 genotypes for chickpea improvement programs

Humara Fayaz et al.

Summary: The study characterized 384 Cicer genotypes using SSR markers, identified 63 alleles, formed four major clusters, and selected a core set of 192 genotypes with the same diversity as the composite set. The core set development in chickpea will be useful for gene discovery through genome-wide association studies. The results provide insights into gene/allele diversity in chickpea germplasm grown under agro-climatic conditions of the North Western-Himalayas.

Yingjie Song et al.

Summary: The assessment of genetic diversity in Tartary buckwheat revealed high levels of diversity within morphological and molecular characteristics. The Tartary buckwheat accessions were divided into three categories, which align with folk nomenclature and taxonomy. The study also found that folk nomenclature, folk taxonomy, and sociocultural norms play a significant role in shaping diversity.

Agronomic variability among hybrids of tomato plant with emphasis on the multivariate analysis

Sebastiao Marcio Azevedo et al.

Summary: Tomato is an economically, socially, and nutritionally important vegetable, but it is a high-risk activity due to climate sensitivity and diseases. Finding hybrid varieties with tolerance to biotic and abiotic factors is crucial. This study evaluated the similarity among tomato salad group hybrids using multivariate and univariate techniques and recommended hybrids with higher divergence to increase the genetic base of tomato breeding program.
