Overexpression and Characterization of a Novel Plant Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenase 1 from Morus notabilis

Zhipeng Qi et al.

Summary: The study cloned a novel carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase from Morus, which efficiently cleaves various carotenoids to generate beta-ionone when overexpressed in E. coli. This discovery provides a foundation for utilizing carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases as biocatalysts and synthetic biology platforms to produce volatile aroma components from carotenoids.

Inhibition of red chlorophyll catabolite reductase improved chlorophyll and carotenoid synthesis in tobacco

Chen Dong et al.

Summary: Red chlorophyll catabolite reductase (RCCR) plays an important role in regulating the biosynthesis of chlorophyll and carotenoids in plants. Silencing RCCR leads to increased chlorophyll and carotenoid content, decreased expression of genes involved in chlorophyll degradation pathway, and increased expression of key genes in carotenoid biosynthesis. Furthermore, the accumulation of Phytosystem II (PS II) supercomplex and LHC II complex in leaves is reduced, and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are increased under high light stress.

SlCCD1A Enhances the Aroma Quality of Tomato Fruits by Promoting the Synthesis of Carotenoid-Derived Volatiles

Guo-Ting Cheng et al.

Summary: The loss of volatiles in tomatoes can lead to a deterioration in flavor. Different sources of volatiles, such as carotenoid-derived volatiles, play a key role in determining the aroma characteristics of tomatoes, with preferences among consumers. Overexpression of the SlCCD1A gene has been shown to enhance the floral, fruity, fatty, and sweet-like aromas in tomato fruits, improving their flavor quality.
