A comprehensive review of zebra chip disease in potato and its management through breeding for resistance/tolerance to 'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' and its insect vector

Sean M. Prager et al.

Summary: Zebra chip disease (ZC) caused by the bacterium 'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' (CLso) is a major threat to global potato production. Efforts are being made to develop resistant or tolerant potato varieties and to understand the mechanisms of insect resistance. This review provides a comprehensive overview of breeding efforts and management strategies for ZC and the potato psyllid.

Investigating the microbial community of Cacopsylla spp. as potential factor in vector competence of phytoplasma

Hannes Schuler et al.

Summary: Phytoplasmas, intracellular bacteria that cause plant diseases, are primarily transmitted by hemipteran vectors. This study investigates the role of microbiomes in the vector capacity of apple proliferation (AP) phytoplasma. The microbiomes of vector and non-vector species were characterized, revealing differences driven by predominant symbionts. Infection with AP-phytoplasma did not affect the microbiome composition in vector species. This study emphasizes the importance of considering the microbiome when investigating factors influencing host vector competence.

Haplotyping the Potato Psyllid (Hemiptera: Triozidae) and the Associated Pathogenic Bacterium 'Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' in Non-crop Alternative Hosts in Southern Idaho

Jennifer Dahan et al.

Summary: The study found that the potato psyllids were most abundant on bittersweet nightshade, with only 2.7% carrying Lso haplotype A or B, suggesting a limited role in the persistence of zebra chip disease. Field bindweed was found to be a transient host for potato psyllids of Northwestern, Western, and Central haplotypes late in the season, with a minor role, if any, in the persistence of Lso and field infestation by potato psyllids.
