Phenotyping and modeling of root hydraulic architecture reveal critical determinants of axial water transport

Yann Boursiac et al.

Summary: This study investigates the water transport properties of highly branched root systems in adult Arabidopsis plants and reveals the overestimation of axial conductivities. By developing a hydraulic model and conducting simulations and experiments, the study also uncovers the growth and water transport mechanisms of Arabidopsis root systems. This approach is instrumental in understanding the root water transport phenotype of plants with complex alterations in root growth or transport functions.

Non-invasive hydrodynamic imaging in plant roots at cellular resolution

Flavius C. Pascut et al.

Summary: This study used Raman microspectroscopy and hydrodynamic modeling to successfully monitor water dynamics in plant root tissues at high temporal and spatial resolutions. The results revealed faster water transport in xylem vessels of Arabidopsis thaliana mutant roots with endodermal diffusion barrier mutations, and showed that water transported via the root xylem does not re-enter outer root tissues or the surrounding soil if endodermal diffusion barriers are intact, thus separating 'two water worlds'.

Salt stress reduces root water uptake in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) through modification of the transcellular transport path

Thorsten Knipfer et al.

Summary: Salt stress reduces the hydraulic conductivity (Lp) of the root system by decreasing water flow along the transcellular path, which involves changes in the activity and gene expression level of aquaporins. Modeling of root-Lp shows that the reduction in root-Lp does not require additional hydraulic resistances through apoplastic barriers at the endodermis. Data points to a near-perfect semi-permeability of roots of control plants (solute reflection coefficient sigma similar to 1.0), while roots of salt-stressed plants are almost as semi-permeable (sigma > 0.8).
