Cyclopiazonic acid type indole alkaloids from Nicotiana tabacum-derived fungus Aspergillus versicolor and their anti-tobacco mosaic virus activities

Guang-Yu Yang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on screening bioactive indole alkaloids from microorganisms. The researchers obtained several new indole alkaloids from a tobacco-derived fungus and discovered their anti-TMV activities. The study also explored the structure-activity relationship of these alkaloids, providing insights for the development of new anti-TMV drugs.

Target-Directed Design, Synthesis, Antiviral Activity, and SARs of 9-Substituted Phenanthroindolizidine Alkaloid Derivatives

Changcun Yan et al.

Summary: A series of 9-substituted tylophorine derivatives targeting TMV RNA were designed, synthesized, and assessed for their anti-TMV activities, with some compounds showing even higher activity than commercial ribavirin. Specifically, compound 3b, 4, and 6 demonstrated 2-3 times higher anti-TMV activities than ribavirin, and compound 4 was identified as a potential plant viral inhibitor with excellent in vitro activity.

Summary: Plant-based nanotechnology programs using virus-like particles (VLPs) and virus nanoparticles (VNPs) are versatile platforms increasingly employed in biotechnology and medicine. Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and potato virus X (PVX) with their high aspect ratios are ideal for drug delivery, while cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) offers unique benefits with its icosahedral structure. These plant viruses show great promise as drug delivery systems and for expressing high value pharmaceutical proteins.
