Analytic theory of nonlinearly coupled electrokinetics in nanochannels

Yuki Uematsu

Summary: A general framework is constructed to calculate the nonlinear electrokinetic coefficients of strongly confined electrolytes, and analytic expressions are obtained. The study demonstrates the important role of high hydrodynamic permeability and ion-wall friction in nonlinear electrokinetics.

Transport of ions in hydrophobic nanotubes

Olga Vinogradova et al.

Summary: This article revisits the theory of electrokinetic ion transport in cylindrical channels of a fixed surface charge density. It focuses on the impact of hydrophobic slippage and mobility of adsorbed surface charges. The paper formulates generalized Onsager relations for cylinders of arbitrary radii and derives exact expressions for mean electro-osmotic mobility and conductivity. The theory provides a simple explanation for the giant enhancement of electrokinetic mobility and conductivity of hydrophobic nanotubes.

Influences of electroosmotic flow on ionic current through nanopores: A comprehensive understanding

Yinghua Qiu et al.

Summary: Continuum simulations are used to investigate the influence of electroosmotic flow (EOF) on ionic transport through nanopores. The results show that EOF has a significant impact on the ionic current, especially in nanopores of smaller diameters. This study provides important guidance for simulation conductance in nanofluidic experiments.

Impact of surface hydrophobicity and ion steric effects on the electroosmotic flow and ion selectivity of a conical nanopore

Doyel Pandey et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the electroosmotic flow and ion transport within a hydrophobic conical nanopore, taking into account ion steric effects and fluid slip at the pore surface. The results show that the pore hydrophobicity enhances the electroosmotic flow, while ion steric interactions can enhance EOF, ion selectivity, and ion concentration polarization.

Measurement of Navier Slip on Individual Nanoparticles in Liquid

Jesse F. Collis et al.

Summary: The Navier slip condition describes the motion of a liquid relative to a neighboring solid surface, with its characteristic Navier slip length being a constitutive property of the solid-liquid interface. Measurement of this slip length is complicated due to its small magnitude, but experimental technique that interrogates the Navier slip length on individual nanoparticles immersed in liquid has been developed with subnanometer precision. Proof-of-principle experiments show a constant slip length of 2.7 +/- 0.6 nm (95% C.I.) on individual, citrate-stabilized, gold nanoparticles in water, independent of particle size, motivating further studies to validate existing molecular simulation data on slip.

A simplified model for gel electrophoresis of a hydrophobic rigid colloid

Bharti et al.

Summary: This study explores gel electrophoresis of a charged dielectric hydrophobic colloid in a charged hydrogel medium with slip velocity conditions. The presence of immobile charges in the gel medium leads to a modified Debye layer and strong background electroosmotic flow, distinguishing gel electrophoresis from free-solution electrophoresis. A first-order perturbation analysis provides a closed form solution for mobility, with implications for mobility reversal by varying Debye length or gel permeability, and the influence of particle dielectric permittivity on mobility. The derivation of a simplified mobility expression allows for easy computation based on parameter values.
