A fractional-step lattice Boltzmann method for multiphase flows with complex interfacial behavior and large density contrast

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a robust fractional-step lattice Boltzmann (FSLB) method is proposed to simulate mass transfer in incompressible multiphase flows with complex interfacial behavior and large density contrast. The FSLB method employs the Chapman-Enskog expansion analysis to reconstruct the governing equations with second-order accuracy. Several benchmark problems are used to validate the capability and reliability of the FSLB method. The results show good agreement with published numerical data.

A spray of puree: Wave-augmented transonic airblast non-Newtonian atomization

D. M. Wilson et al.

Summary: This paper presents the characterization of viscous, non-Newtonian atomization by means of internal waves for a twin-fluid injector. The atomization of such fluids is challenging, especially at low gas-liquid mass ratios. The paper details the mechanisms that enhance the disintegration in a wave-augmented atomization process. The results show three atomization mechanisms that are a direct result of wave formation: wave impact momentum, pressure buildup, and droplet breakaway. The numerical simulations reveal that waves collapse into the puree sheet with a radial momentum flux and wave-induced pressure buildup creates a large pressure gradient across the sheet prior to bursting.

Development of a New Hybrid Stochastic/Trajectory Droplet Collision Model for Spray Simulations in Internal Combustion Engines

Shaoyi Suo et al.

Summary: A new hybrid stochastic/trajectory (HST) droplet collision model was developed for simulating spray processes in engines, combining stochastic and trajectory methods. The model considers the number of droplets represented by each parcel, uses an adaptive collision cell technique, and updates the formula for selecting collision pairs to accurately reproduce the spatial distribution of droplets after collision. The HST model is capable of satisfactorily reproducing spray morphology, collision frequency, and Sauter mean diameter of droplets, and shows good independence on computational grid size, time step, and parcel number.

Parallel load-balancing for combustion with spray for large-scale simulation

A. Thari et al.

Summary: An asynchronous task-based Eulerian-Lagrangian approach is presented for efficient parallel multiphysics simulations that can scale for arbitrary large number of particles. The method partitions the multi-physics problem based on tasks, allowing each single-physics problem to be solved concurrently using its own set of processes, demonstrating improved parallel efficiency and great potential.
