Chemical effects in hydrodynamic cavitation on a chip: The role of cavitating flow patterns

Farzad Rokhsar Talabazar et al.

Summary: Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) has emerged as a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly approach in the field of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). This study investigates the chemical effects of the HC on a chip concept and highlights the importance of understanding the complex nature of cavitation at different flow patterns. The results show that the triiodide releasing amount is highest before the inception of cavitation and decreases afterwards, except for the case of developed twin cavities where it increases. This study suggests that reactors utilizing the HC on a chip concept could be environmentally friendly tools for waste and material conversion.

Enhancing Cavitation Intensity in Co-Flow Water Cavitation Peening With Organ Pipe Nozzles

A. N. Vidvans et al.

Summary: Co-flow water cavitating jets induce compressive residual stress through the collapse of the cavitation cloud, with the organ pipe inner jet nozzle geometry significantly enhancing mass loss and strip curvature by 61% and 66% compared to an unexcited inner jet nozzle. Residual stress measurements show that the organ pipe inner jet nozzle produces deeper compressive residual stresses in the material than the unexcited inner jet nozzle.

On cavitation inception and cavitating flow patterns in a multi-orifice microfluidic device with a functional surface

Ali Hosseinpour Shafaghi et al.

Summary: Over the past decade, hydrodynamic cavitation has been widely utilized in various fields such as energy harvesting and biomedical applications. A new microfluidic device with eight parallel micro-orifices and roughness elements was designed to enhance cavitation inception and intensify cavitating flows. Different flow patterns including cavitation clouds, twin cavities, sheet cavities, and bubbly flows were observed as the cavitation number decreased in the experimental setup.

Kelvin-Helmholtz instability governs the cavitation cloud shedding in Venturi microchannel

Darjan Podbevsek et al.

Summary: The paper explores the visualization of cavitation in micro-Venturi channels and identifies Kelvin-Helmholtz instability as a dominant mechanism for cavitation cloud shedding. The study also proposes a simple model to explain this phenomenon and sheds light on the suppression of supercavitating conditions in the micro-Venturi due to the instability.

Numerical simulation and analysis of multi-scale cavitating flows

Ebrahim Ghahramani et al.

Summary: Cavitating flows involve vapour structures with various length scales, highlighting the importance of accurately estimating small-scale cavities. A hybrid cavitation model that combines a mixture model with a Lagrangian bubble model has been developed to capture multi-scale dynamics and interactions between vapour structures and the continuous flow. This approach shows considerable improvements in predicting large cavities and capturing small-scale structures, even with lower mesh resolution.

Design and fabrication of a vigorous cavitation-on-a-chip device with a multiple microchannel configuration

Farzad Rokhsar Talabazar et al.

Summary: A new 'cavitation-on-a-chip' device is proposed in this study to reduce the upstream pressure required for hydrodynamic cavitation, with further pressure reduction achieved by using poly(vinyl alcohol) microbubble suspension. Different cavitating flow patterns with various intensities can be observed within the same device, and cavitating flows intensify faster in the proposed device compared to previous studies. This next-generation device has high potential for applications in microfluidic/organ-on-a-chip devices, such as integrated drug release and tissue engineering.
