Numerical simulation of flow induced vibration of two rigidly connected cylinders in different arrangements

Yun Gao et al.

Summary: The numerical study investigates the flow induced vibration responses of two rigidly connected cylinders at different staggered configurations. The results show that the wake interference between the cylinders weakens as the angle of incidence increases, leading to a decreasing trend in maximum vibration amplitude and total mean drag coefficient.

The state-of-the-art review on the wake alteration of a rotating cylinder and the associated interaction with flow-induced vibration

Tao Tang et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of the fluid-structure interaction of an actively or passively rotating cylinder, considering flow-induced vibration. Four response modes are summarized. It is found that active rotation can enhance drag reduction but has a negative effect on lift force, while the vibration response of a cylinder with a time-varying rotation velocity would be suppressed at specific rotation amplitudes and frequencies.

Vortex-induced vibrations of two rigidly coupled circular cylinders in tandem arrangement

Huan Ping et al.

Summary: In this paper, the transverse vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) of two rigidly connected circular cylinders in a tandem configuration were studied. It was found that the system's dynamic response exhibits diverse characteristics in different velocity ranges, and a quasi-periodic phenomenon was observed in the specific lower branch, which is caused by the switching between two flow states.

Vortex-induced vibrations of two rigidly coupled circular cylinders of unequal diameters at low Reynolds number

Huan Ping et al.

Summary: Numerical computations were conducted for two rigidly connected cylinders of unequal sizes undergoing Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) in a free stream, revealing a strong dependency of structural dynamics and hydrodynamic forces on the arrangements. A deeper analysis of wake topology and surface pressure in extreme cases shed light on the underlying mechanisms leading to distinctly different responses. The interaction and amalgamation of shear layers from two cylinders during oscillation were found to result in high-amplitude response, while the absence of direct interaction between shear layers favorably stabilized the wake in maintaining low-amplitude response.

Aerodynamic Characteristics of Coupled Twin Circular Bridge Hangers with Near Wake Interference

Chaoqun Wang et al.

Summary: Research has been conducted on the aerodynamic characteristics of coupled twin cylinders in cross flow and their effects on synchronous galloping. Experimental results show that there are two typical flow patterns around twin cylinders with different spacing, and there is a critical spacing below which vortex shedding of the upstream cylinder is suppressed by the downstream cylinder. This leads to a peak in total lift force for the twin cylinders.
