Modeling the spontaneous imbibition of non-Newtonian fluids into the fractal porous media of tight reservoirs

Yunxuan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new fractal model to describe the spontaneous-imbibition process of non-Newtonian fluids in tight reservoirs. The model was validated against experiments conducted on core samples from a tight reservoir, showing a good match in imbibition profiles. The modeling results suggest a nonlinear relationship between imbibition distance and the square root of time when considering tortuosity and non-Newtonian fluids. This study provides new insights into modeling fracturing-fluid flow in tight reservoirs.

Capillary imbibition and flow of wetting liquid in irregular capillaries: A 100-year review

Jianchao Cai et al.

Summary: This review critically summarizes the fundamentals and concepts of various capillary imbibition models within different geometries over the past 100 years. It discusses the applications of these models and proposes a universal model based on dynamic wetting conditions and equivalent cylindrical geometry. Future research is suggested to focus on analyzing corner flow dynamics, wetting fluid snap-off, capillary rise of non-Newtonian fluids, and employing accurate physical simulation methods for capillary-driven flow processes.

Characteristic Forced and Spontaneous Imbibition Behavior in Strongly Water-Wet Sandstones Based on Experiments and Simulation

Pal Ostebo Andersen et al.

Summary: This study investigates forced and spontaneous imbibition of water to displace oil in strongly water-wet sandstone samples. The experiments show that capillary and advective forces play vital roles in the imbibition process under different conditions. The numerical simulations consistently match the experimental observations and provide insights into the pressure and recovery behavior in strongly water-wet systems.

A new stabilised scheme for the Richards' equation with evapotranspiration

Gaspar J. Machado et al.

Summary: A new second-order stabilised numerical method for solving water infiltration in porous soil is proposed, which modifies the representation of head pressure and implements a second-order positivity preserving scheme. The benefits of the method are highlighted through applications to root suction in critical situations and a strategy for multi-layer problems is presented.

Wettability control on imbibition behavior of oil and water in porous media

Zhilin Cheng et al.

Summary: Wettability plays a crucial role in the imbibition physics of oil and water in a matrix fracture medium. The study reveals the displacement and distribution characteristics of fluids, the types of flow regimes, and the fluid morphology under different conditions. The study also analyzes the influences of wettability on oil recovery and energy conversion. The results show that wettability affects the imbibition front and the flow pattern, with increasing theta or Ca shifting the flow pattern from capillary regime to capillary-viscous regime to viscous regime. The study also discusses the application of scaling models to fit the imbibition data. The findings provide insights into investigating other influencing factors on imbibition behaviors of fluids in more complex media.

Computational modelling of paper-based capillary-driven microfluidic flow cells

P. Sadeghi et al.

Summary: A mathematical model is developed and validated for electrochemical energy conversion in paper-based, capillary-driven, microfluidic flow cells. By refining the Nernst-Planck equation, a 2D model is able to accurately represent a 3D cell in unsteady flows. The model is used to optimize the flow architecture and microstructure of the electrodes and absorbent pad, resulting in significant improvements in power output, runtime, and energy efficiency of the cell.

Analytical, experimental, and numerical study of capillary rise dynamics from inertial to viscous flow

Yousef Shiri et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dominant forces and regimes involved in the initial moments of capillary rise imbibition process in a tube through analytical, experimental, and numerical methods. The validity of analytical solutions discussed in literature is verified by comparing them to experimental observations and numerical results. Removal of simplifying assumptions in numerical formulations leads to closer results to experimental records, highlighting significant differences between theoretical models and numerical lattice Boltzmann method.

New model for estimating geometric tortuosity of variably saturated porous media using 3D synchrotron microcomputed tomography imaging

Zaher A. Jarrar et al.

Summary: In this study, geometric tortuosity of natural unconsolidated sand packs was directly determined from 3D tomography images, and a simple model to predict tortuosity of variably saturated porous media was developed. Wetting phase saturation was found to provide a good estimate of relative tortuosity. The proposed regression model showed better estimates of geometric tortuosity compared to existing theoretical and analytical models.

Numerical Investigation of Fluid Flow Instabilities in Pore-scale with Heterogeneities in Permeability and Wettability

Yousef Shiri et al.

Summary: The study suggests that permeability and wettability constrasts in quadrant geometry can affect the dynamics of immiscible fluid displacement, especially with heterogeneity in wettability, permeability, and flow properties. This can lead to effects on fluid front patterns and displacement efficiency.
