Enhanced pool boiling on microstructured surfaces with spatially-controlled mixed wettability

X. Z. Sun et al.

Summary: Surface wettability is crucial for pool boiling heat transfer performance. This study focuses on microstructured surfaces with spatially-controlled mixed wettability and investigates their pool boiling performance. The results show that the size of hydrophobic spots on the tops of microstructures has a significant influence on the boiling performance. By optimizing the combined effects of mixed wettability and microstructures, the new microstructured surface outperforms plain surfaces and those with entirely modified wettability. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and critical heat flux (CHF) are significantly enhanced.

Jing-Da Yao et al.

Summary: This paper conducts a numerical investigation of bubble dynamics during nucleate pool boiling using the lattice Boltzmann method. It introduces a leaky-dielectric model that allows free charges to accumulate at the gas-liquid interface for a more realistic simulation. The results are validated and the influences of different factors are analyzed, leading to the identification of an optimum parameter combination for the best acceleration effect.

Lattice Boltzmann method for simulation of solid-liquid conjugate boiling heat transfer surface with mixed wettability structures

Hailiang Cao et al.

Summary: Based on the one-component multiphase lattice Boltzmann method, a novel solid-liquid conjugate boiling heat transfer pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is tentatively proposed in this paper. The model successfully predicts different energy transfer rates in solid, liquid, and vapor regions. The study analyzes the bubble detaching behavior and boiling heat transfer performance on a rectangular cavity structure, finding that the hydrophobic cavity surface can initiate bubble nucleation earlier, while the hydrophilic plane heating surface can restrict bubble expansion. Additionally, the study examines the relationship between bubble detaching period and surface contact angle, and the impact of mixed wettability surfaces on bubble detaching and boiling heat transfer.

Enhanced pool boiling on micro-nano composited surfaces with nanostructures on micro-pin-fins

Bin Liu et al.

Summary: The distribution of nanostructures on micro-nano composited surfaces significantly affects the pool boiling heat transfer performance. Surfaces with nanostructures covering the top and bottom sides have the lowest wall superheat, while surfaces with nanostructures etched at the top corners or edges have higher heat transfer coefficients. Bubbles are mainly generated on the tops of micro-pin-fins, alleviating the blockage of capillary wicking channels in high heat flux regions. Moreover, the condensation effect of subcooled liquid on the bubbles generated at the tops of micro-pin-fins is stronger.

Summary: In this paper, the pool boiling heat transfer on pillar-structured surfaces with different wettability patterns and channel-to-pillar width ratios was experimentally investigated. The results showed that the effect of wettability patterns on boiling performance was similar to that on plain surfaces, but the differences between hydrophilic and hydrophobic patterns increased with the decrease of the channel-to-pillar width ratio.

Nucleate boiling enhancement by structured surfaces with distributed wettability-modified regions: A lattice Boltzmann study

W. X. Li et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel pillar-structured surface for enhancing nucleate boiling heat transfer and categorizes the bubble dynamics into three regimes on this surface with distributed wettability-modified regions. Among these regimes, regime II demonstrates the best boiling performance due to the synergistic effects of surface structure and mixed wettability, leading to elongated triple-phase contact lines on the pillar top and reduced dry spot area. The study also shows that the optimal boiling performance is consistently observed in cases falling within regime II.

Pool boiling enhancement through induced vibrations in the liquid pool due to moving solid bodies-A numerical study using lattice Boltzmann method (LBM)

Kaushik Mondal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of induced vibrations in a liquid pool on pool boiling heat transfer using a lattice Boltzmann method. The results show that induced vibrations lead to higher bubble growth rate and detachment frequency, facilitating bubble growth and early detachment, resulting in higher heat flux. Sensitivity analysis of induced frequency and amplitude of vibrations reveals a peak in bubble departure frequency before decreasing with continuous increase in frequency and amplitude.
