Dynamics of a sphere in inertial shear flow between parallel walls

Andrew J. Fox et al.

Summary: In this study, the motion of a rigid sphere in ambient simple shear flow of a Newtonian fluid between infinite parallel walls is investigated using the lattice Boltzmann method. For a neutrally buoyant sphere, a critical Reynolds number determines the equilibrium position, which transitions to a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation above the critical value. The orientation of the channel and the gravitational force play a significant role in breaking the symmetry of the particle dynamics, leading to imperfect bifurcation and the emergence of off-centre equilibrium positions.

High-resolution particle separation by inertial focusing in high aspect ratio curved microfluidics

Javier Cruz et al.

Summary: Inertial focusing in HARC systems shows the capability to separate particles with extremely high resolution, down to 80 nm size difference. By developing a model considering the main flow, secondary flow, and lift force in HARC microchannels, accurate prediction of system performance is possible. This technology has the potential to facilitate the analysis of complex fluid samples containing bioparticles, such as bacteria, viruses, or eukaryotic organelles.
