Sex-specific muscle activation and oxygenation kinetics during a repetitive forward pointing task

SangHoon Yoon et al.

Summary: This study compared the minute-by-minute muscle activity and oxygenation responses to a repetitive arm motion-induced fatiguing task between males and females. The results showed that greater changes in oxygen supply and activation amplitude occurred during the second half of the task. Females exhibited greater anterior deltoid activation amplitude throughout the task, while only males showed increases in anterior and posterior deltoid activation amplitudes. These findings suggest that females may have a sub-optimal fatigue-mitigation mechanism compared to males, which may contribute to their greater susceptibility to neck/shoulder musculoskeletal disorders.

A cluster-randomized trial of workplace ergonomics and neck-specific exercise versus ergonomics and health promotion for office workers to manage neck pain - a secondary outcome analysis

Venerina Johnston et al.

Summary: The study found that the ergonomic and exercise training intervention was more effective in reducing neck pain intensity in all workers and neck pain cases immediately after the intervention period (12 weeks), but not at 12 months. The results suggest the need for continued exercise to maintain long-term benefits.
