Observation of a linked-loop quantum state in a topological magnet

Ilya Belopolski et al.

Summary: Topological invariants play a central role in classifying quantum phases and describing various phenomena in matter. In this study, an unusual linking-number invariant associated with loops of electronic band crossings in a mirror-symmetric ferromagnet is observed. The experiment confirms the invariant structure and discovers related boundary states on the sample surface. This finding motivates further exploration of magnetic and superconducting quantum matter using knot theory.

Observation of novel topological states in hyperbolic lattices

Weixuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the existence of exotic topological states in engineered hyperbolic lattices, which have unique properties compared to their Euclidean counterparts. They achieved the boundary-dominated first-order Chern edge state and observed fractal-like midgap higher-order zero modes in deformed hyperbolic lattices. The findings suggest a useful platform to study topological phases beyond Euclidean space and may have potential applications in high-efficient topological devices.

Experimental Observation of Higher-Order Topological Anderson Insulators

Weixuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Research demonstrates that disorders can induce higher-order topological corner states and quantized fraction corner charge, a new phenomenon. Through classical analog platforms constructed in experiments, disorder-induced corner states are observed. This work challenges the traditional view and provides a feasible platform to investigate the interaction between disorders and higher-order topological phases.

Realizing Hopf Insulators in Dipolar Spin Systems

Thomas Schuster et al.

Summary: The Hopf insulator is a weak topological insulator with conducting edge states protected by an integer-valued linking number invariant, which can be naturally realized in lattices of dipolar-interacting spins. The long-ranged, anisotropic nature of the dipole-dipole interactions allows for the precise detail required in the momentum-space structure, while different spin orientations ensure the necessary structure of the complex phases of the hoppings.

N-band Hopf insulator

Bastien Lapierre et al.

Summary: The study generalizes the three-dimensional two-band Hopf insulator to many bands, finding the Z classification of an N-band Hopf insulator related to the quantized isotropic magnetoelectric coefficient of its bulk. Despite the nonuniqueness in dividing a finite system into bulk and boundary, it is discovered that the magnetoelectric coefficient of the bulk and the anomalous Hall conductivity of the boundary are quantized to the same integer value. An experiment is proposed to measure the quantized boundary effect in a nonequilibrium state.

Floquet engineering ultracold polar molecules to simulate topological insulators

Thomas Schuster et al.

Summary: The paper presents a quantitative experimental blueprint for the quantum simulation of topological insulators, focusing on the Hopf insulator and introducing techniques to optimize dipolar Hopf insulators. They predict that Hopf insulators can naturally arise from dipolar interaction and demonstrate ways to control dipolar hoppings and tune resonance conditions using molecular AC polarizabilities. The experiments are capable of detecting the unconventional topology of the Hopf insulator by varying lattice termination at its edges, leading to three distinct classes of edge mode spectra.

Teleportation of Berry curvature on the surface of a Hopf insulator

A. Alexandradinata et al.

Summary: The paradigm of topological insulators states that an energy gap separates conduction and valence bands with opposite topological invariants. This study proposes that equal-energy bands with opposite Chern invariants can be spatially separated on the opposite facets of a finite crystalline Hopf insulator. The nontrivial boundary states arising from a generalized Weyl equation provide insights into the behavior of Berry curvature in this system.
