Soft-lubrication interactions between a rigid sphere and an elastic wall

Vincent Bertin et al.

Summary: In this article, we derive a soft-lubrication model to compute the forces and torque experienced by a rigid sphere near an elastic wall. The model focuses on small deformations of the surface and uses perturbation analysis. The response of planar elastic substrates is computed in the framework of linear elasticity, and the elastohydrodynamic forces are obtained analytically using the Lorentz reciprocal theorem.

Soft hydraulics: from Newtonian to complex fluid flows through compliant conduits

Ivan C. Christov

Summary: Microfluidic devices manufactured from soft polymeric materials have become popular in chemical and biological analysis due to their cheap and disposable nature. This review focuses on the physics of these systems and summarizes recent progress in understanding the interaction between non-Newtonian fluid flows and deformable boundaries. The review also explores key experimental results and relevant applications, along with the fundamental principles for physics-based modeling.

Hidden Topological Structure of Flow Network Functionality

Jason W. Rocks et al.

Summary: The ability to manipulate the flow and control the transmission in venation networks is crucial for various organisms. By modifying individual edges in the networks, organisms can robustly control the propagation of inputs to perform specific tasks. Networks with different local architectures can still perform the same functions, highlighting a fundamental disconnect between structure and function. Through persistent homology analysis of networks tuned to perform complex tasks, it was found that the responses of such networks encode a hidden topological structure composed of sectors of nearly uniform pressure, providing a quantitative relationship between structure and function in flow networks.

Reduced models of unidirectional flows in compliant rectangular ducts at finite Reynolds number

Xiaojia Wang et al.

Summary: Soft hydraulics, focusing on the interaction between internal flow and compliant conduits, is analyzed in microfluidics. Newtonian fluid flow in a rectangular duct with a compliant top wall is studied to develop a one-dimensional reduced model. It is found that the Poiseuille number varies in the streamwise direction for compliant ducts, with compliance potentially increasing it by up to four times.

Fluid-structure interactions enable passive flow control in real and biomimetic plants

Keunhwan Park et al.

Summary: This study presents an autonomous flow control principle inspired by vascular transport in plants, allowing for physical programming of pressure drop versus flow rate relation through networks of cells linked by nonlinear valves. The nonlinearity is a result of fluid-structure interactions that enable a flexible element to selectively block the valve aperture.

Nonlinear microfluidics: device physics, functions, and applications

H. M. Xia et al.

Summary: Microfluidic flow is typically laminar, but at intermediate Reynolds numbers, weak-inertia flow regimes with secondary flows such as Dean vortices can be accessed through microfluidic manipulations. Nonlinear factors like non-Newtonian fluid properties, concurrent flow of dissimilar fluids, compliant fluidic structures, etc., can also affect flow behaviors.
