Argon doped pellets for fast and efficient radiative power removal in ASDEX Upgrade

A. Kallenbach et al.

Summary: Research shows that power can be effectively and rapidly removed from the outer plasma region by injecting argon-doped deuterium pellets. The injection of argon leads to a fast non-toroidally symmetric radiation pattern, which is explained by the ionisation process of the argon neutrals. This injection method has advantages over gas puffing in terms of faster radiation reaction time and elevated radiative efficiency.

Electron temperature and density measurement by Thomson scattering with a high repetition rate laser of 20 kHz on LHD

H. Funaba et al.

Summary: Thomson scattering measurements using a high-repetition-rate laser have been conducted in the Large Helical Device. As an example, measurements at a 20 kHz repetition rate were performed in hydrogen pellet-injected plasmas. Signal processing methods were developed to evaluate electron temperature profiles at nearly 70 spatial points with time intervals of 50 μs. Electron density profiles were derived after Raman scattering calibration, and rapid changes in electron temperature and density profiles within 1 ms were observed.

Targeting a Versatile Actuator for EU-DEMO: Xenon Doping of Fueling Pellets

P. T. Lang et al.

Summary: Xenon is considered troublesome in larger amounts in the fuel cycle, but direct and efficient codeposition inside the confined plasma with solid cryogenic pellets is favored. Investigation is underway at ASDEX Upgrade to develop a versatile pellet actuator, with results indicating that fueling pellets with admixed xenon can provide advanced performance and shorter response times. This exploration suggests that fueling pellets with auxiliary gases can be a versatile, efficient, and fast actuator for additional control features such as radiative plasma cooling.
