Three-dimensional Dirac semimetal metamaterial enabled by negative couplings

Zhaoxian Su et al.

Summary: In this study, an acoustic metamaterial with Dirac points is demonstrated by designing the sign of coupling terms. The transition from 3D Dirac point to Weyl points can be obtained by tuning the coupling parameter along the longitudinal direction. The negative coupling is realized by inserting additional off-resonant sites, which results in a four-band crossing point and helicoid surface states.

Acoustic Mobius Insulators from Projective Symmetry

Tianzi Li et al.

Summary: In the presence of gauge symmetry, this study demonstrates the construction of Mobius-twisted topological phases by exploiting projective translation symmetry. Two Mobius insulators, including a two-dimensional one with first-order band topology and a three-dimensional one with higher-order band topology, are realized experimentally in acoustic crystals for the first time. The peculiar Mobius edge and hinge states are observed unambiguously through real-space visualization, momentum-space spectroscopy, and phase-space winding analysis. This work not only provides a new avenue for artificial systems with the interplay between gauge and crystalline symmetries, but also establishes a new framework for topological physics based on projective symmetry.

Observation of Degenerate Zero-Energy Topological States at Disclinations in an Acoustic Lattice

Yuanchen Deng et al.

Summary: In this study, a paradigm is devised and experimentally validated in acoustic lattices, which allows topological states to bind to disclinations without a fractional density of states but with preserved chiral symmetry. This study provides new insights into the interplay between symmetry protection in topological phases and topological defects, with potential applications in classical and quantum systems alike.

Switching Spinless and Spinful Topological Phases with Projective PT Symmetry

Y. X. Zhao et al.

Summary: The study reveals the possibility of switching the two fundamental classes via Z(2) projective representations, allowing for unique topological phases to be achieved in different classes.
