Electron transport in a collisional plasma with multiple ion species in the presence of a magnetic field

Andrei N. Simakov

Summary: The classical work of Braginskii provides a fluid description of a collisional plasma immersed in a magnetic field, but its expressions for electron transport coefficients may underestimate or overestimate the values. Several papers have attempted to correct these results, and this paper presents its own effort to solve the problem.

Magnetized ICF implosions: Scaling of temperature and yield enhancement

C. A. Walsh et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of an applied magnetic field on the yield and hot-spot temperature of inertial confinement fusion implosions. The study shows that temperature amplification due to magnetization is consistent with 2D extended-magnetohydrodynamic simulations. It is found that a magnetic field has the greatest benefit for low-temperature implosions and is most beneficial for implosions that are more highly perturbed.

Transport coefficients for magnetic-field evolution in inviscid magnetohydrodynamics

J. R. Davies et al.

Summary: This study explores the effects of magnetized resistivity and electrothermal tensors on magnetic field generation, diffusion, and advection. It finds that errors in fits by Epperlein and Haines, as well as Braginskii, can lead to physically incorrect results for cross field advection, particularly at small Hall parameters. New fits for the cross field advection terms are proposed to address these issues.

Symmetric Set of Transport Coefficients for Collisional Magnetized Plasma

James D. Sadler et al.

Summary: Research shows that commonly used approximations for alpha(perpendicular to) and beta(perpendicular to) transport coefficients may cause artificial magnetic dissipation and discontinuities, while magnetic transport actually relies on other coefficients. By providing fitting functions to rectify this problem, the discrepancies with kinetic simulations have been resolved, leading to a reduction in density asymmetry amplitude in specific areas. Recognizing the importance of certain coefficients, the symmetry of magnetic and thermal transport, as well as the symmetry of the coefficients themselves, has been explicitly outlined.

Formulation of 8-moment plasma transport with application to the Nernst effect

Jason Hamilton et al.

Summary: This study utilizes 8-moment plasma models with two different distribution functions to investigate the Nernst effect and heat transport in dense plasma, presented in a hyperbolic form. Numerical implementation with the relaxation method is demonstrated, and a comparison test with Braginskii's transport equations shows slight differences in transport coefficients while confirming the presence of the same physics.

Collective optical Thomson scattering in pulsed-power driven high energy density physics experiments (invited)

L. G. Suttle et al.

Summary: Optical collective Thomson scattering is utilized to diagnose magnetized high energy density physics experiments at the Magpie pulsed-power generator in Imperial College London. The system probes a wide range of high-temperature plasma objects, allowing independent measurements of plasma flow velocity. Measurements of plasma temperature and velocity are obtained after observation with an imaging spectrometer.
