Gap solitons in a one-dimensional driven-dissipative topological lattice

Nicolas Pernet et al.

Summary: Drive engineering can stabilize new nonlinear phases in topological systems and establish dissipatively stabilized solitons as a powerful resource in topological photonics. The nonlinear response of a polariton lattice implementing the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model is studied, demonstrating the formation and robust nonlinear properties of topological gap solitons. Leveraging the driven-dissipative nature of the system, a class of bulk gap solitons with high sublattice polarization is discovered, providing an all-optical way to create non-trivial interfaces for Bogoliubov excitations.

Annihilation of exceptional points from different Dirac valleys in a 2D photonic system

M. Krol et al.

Summary: The authors experimentally demonstrate the annihilation of exceptional points (EPs) from different Dirac points (valleys) by increasing non-Hermiticity in a liquid crystal microcavity platform. The platform utilizes voltage-controlled birefringence and TE-TM photonic spin-orbit-coupling, with non-Hermiticity provided by polarization-dependent losses. This study has significant implications for the field of non-Hermitian valley-physics.

Tuning of the Berry curvature in 2D perovskite polaritons

Laura Polimeno et al.

Summary: By engineering the energy dispersion of polaritons in a strongly coupled organic-inorganic two-dimensional perovskite single-crystal microcavity, different Berry curvature distributions of polariton bands can be obtained. External magnetic field breaks time-reversal symmetry, leading to exciton Zeeman splitting and lifting the degeneracy of Hamilton diabolical points. This results in bands with non-zero integral Berry curvatures, which can be modified by tuning external parameters like temperature, magnetic field, and sample thickness.

Nontrivial band geometry in an optically active system

Jiahuan Ren et al.

Summary: This study presents a direct measurement of the Berry curvature and quantum metric of photon modes in a planar cavity containing a birefringent organic microcrystal, showcasing the potential application of optical activity. The experiment conducted at room temperature and visible wavelength highlights the use of organic materials for implementing non-magnetic and low-cost topological photonic devices. The authors' direct measurement of the nontrivial Berry curvature in a birefringent continuous organic system with emergent optical activity offers new insights in the field of topological photonics.

Tunable exciton-polariton condensation in a two-dimensional Lieb lattice at room temperature

Fabio Scafirimuto et al.

Summary: Microcavities with embedded optically active materials allow for the creation of exciton-polariton condensates in the regime of strong light-matter interaction. The authors demonstrate room temperature polariton condensation in a nano-fabricated two-dimensional Lieb lattice with an organic polymer. This study shows the potential for investigating extended topological polariton systems under ambient conditions.

Direct measurement of a non-Hermitian topological invariant in a hybrid light-matter system

Rui Su et al.

Summary: The text discusses the importance of topology in understanding and designing robust materials, as well as measuring the topological invariants in both Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems. It presents the measurement of a non-Hermitian topological invariant in the momentum-resolved spectrum of exciton polaritons, highlighting the potential for realizing non-Hermitian topological phases in condensed matter systems.

Summary: The study focuses on topological defect modes in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice, observing highly coherent polariton lasing and confirming excitonic contribution through the application of an external magnetic field. Experimental findings of robust lasing and high temporal coherence are accurately reproduced by a combination of models, providing deeper insight into topological effects on microlasers.

Both Symmetric and Asymmetric Electro-Optic Dynamic Behavior with SSD (Smectic Single Domain) Liquid Crystals

Akihiro Mochizuki

Summary: The dynamic behavior of retardation switching in SSD-liquid crystal panels is closely related to the initial molecular stacking configurations, with both in-plane and out-of-plane retardation switching behaviors affecting the overall behavior. The symmetry of the retardation switching is affected by the molecular stacking configuration, which can change depending on the applied electric field strength. Heavily twisted molecular stacking configurations result in asymmetric retardation switching behavior regardless of the electric field strength.

Topological states and interplay between spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions in a spinful Su-Schrieffer-Heeger nanowire

Zhi-Hai Liu et al.

Summary: By regulating the confining-potential configuration, a nontrivial topological phase can be achieved; the topology of the chain is not affected by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction due to the persisting chiral symmetry in the absence of the Zeeman field; manipulating the energies of edge modes is possible by varying the magnitude and direction of the external magnetic field.
